Just sitting here minding my own business trying to annoy as many JUers as possible when I hear something that is definately out of place on my very narrow little street. I know the sound intimately; a large diesel engine. I glanced over at the mirror and there was a large question mark floating above my head much like the Arby's logo tends to do with some people. I first peek out the blinds and as it's kinda dark I couldn't quite make out what exactly the large shape creeping by actually ...
Ok, today Socrates has thought up a new game. No matter where I go or what I'm doing he comes and stands on top of my feet and then looks up at me like "What are you gonna do about it?" At first I thought he was wanting me to pick him up or play with him or something, but that's not it. If I pick him up he wants back down and when I put him down he stands on my feet again. I'm not sure exactly how this is fun for him, but whatever, as long as he's amused I guess.
Geez, I thought I was losing it. I kept feeling like things were crawling on my skin, you know, that creepy crawly feeling you can get sometimes. I was sitting here working on updating my systems and kept getting that feeling. It was really starting to bug me. I haven't had that many beers I kept brushing at my legs and trying to ignore it. Finally I noticed a sugar ant crawling on my leg. I got to looking and sure enough there were several of the little buggers crawling on the carpet....
I really hate election years. We are inundated with political campaign ads and the majority of them don't bother telling us why we should vote for the candidate the ad supports, but rather why we shouldn't vote for whomever they are running against. Mudslinging at it worst. As I have been watching the news this morning I have seen ads for all sorts of people running for office and, with one single exception, they all spent the majority of their air time telling me why I shouldn't vote for ...
I just caught this story on our local news station. It seems this 75 year old woman had come out of the grocery and was loading her grocery bags into her car when a man snatched her purse and took off running. She chased after him and found where he was hiding. After giving him a serious tongue lashing he handed over the purse. She then felt sorry for him and gave him a couple of bucks. Gutsy lady. I'm just glad she didn't wind up as a murder story instead.
I'm watching that America's Most Wanted show. They just profiled a guy who has murdered some children. The most distinctive part of their description of him is that he has a mole below his left eye. The cop on the case said that "...it's very rare to have a mole in that location..." I have a mole under my left eye. Crap, I must be the guy! Of course, I haven't been in Alabama in a long time so that complicates things a bit, but that's a mere technicality. I have a mole there so I must be h...
I really hate getting calls from telemarketers. 8:45 PM and my phone rings. Is it someone I know? Nope. A telemarketer wanting to sell me windows. I decided "what the hell", and let her do her thing. I just listened until it came time for her to start asking those annoying qualifier questions. Her : "Do you own your home?" Me: "Yeah, I own the place where I live. It's really nice to own your own place." Her "Yes, sir it is. Do you..." Me: "Do you own your own place?" Her: "U...
I was browsing around the web, not really looking for anything in particular, and visited classicshaving.com to see what kind of deals they might have on travel related shaving gear and assorted other things I am always on the look out for. Trucking sometimes requires one to buy certain things that are better suited to travel than the normally used items. Shaving mugs and brushes are among those items. I prefer using a cake cream and a nice brush, but their problematic in a travel shave kit. ...
I picked up the grader yesterday in Spartanburg, SC and promptly pointed my rig towards home. Friday. Holiday weekend. Traffic. Complete and absolute idiots behind the wheel. One, two, three backups caused by accidents. By the time I reached Richmond Hill, GA I'd had enough of the crap. I pulled off the interstate intending to park at the truckstop for a while, spotted a hotel with truck parking and a lounge and pulled in there instead. Holiday weekend rates of course, but what the hell. I...
After putting off my final stop this afternoon I headed to the truckstop to await the information for my next load. I'm picking up a grader in Spartanburg, SC heading down into FL, and then home from there. While at the truckstop I was checking out the knife shop. He had a great many quality knives of every type and description. While browsing in one display case I noticed a razor that looks very much like the antique Merkur that I shave with. Sure enough, it was the same brand. Actually,...
This trip started out interesting right from the loading. Two of the three generators I am delivering are huge. We had to get creative to make it all fit on the deck of my double drop. We wound up putting one of the huge ones on the small back deck, sticking out over the low center deck, and then placing a steel brace under it to support the free end. While it looked very unstable it rode quite well. I was still glad that it was the first delivery. While driving through KY yesterday I pass...
What is it with people and relationships? It's amazing how many people ask me if I have a wife or girlfriend at home. Why? They almost always seem surprised or something when I say that I don't. Why do people assume that everyone has some sort of need to be intimately involved with another person? I have never been good at the whole relationship thing and have always found it to be more trouble than it's worth. Maybe that makes me weird or something, but most of the people I know who are i...
I made it back to the yard around lunch time. When I walked into the office I was greated by the boss and presented with a nice black satin company jacket, a new thermos, and a $50 savings bond. Last week was Trucker Appreciation Week and since I wasn't at the yard for the annual cook-out the boss wanted to make sure and give me my goodies when I got in. It was kinda nice. I'd been wanting a new company jacket since I came back to work. As for the thermos, I looked at it and asked him how...
Yesterday morning I picked up my return load back North. Friday afternoon I called the place I was to be for the pick up, a towing yard of all places, and got directions. I agreed to be there at 8:00 am. When I arrived a few minutes early I wasn't too shocked to find that nobody was there yet. I waited until 8:00 and when no-one had shown up I called the guy's cell number. The bastard was still in bed. I told him I was there waiting for him. He apologized and said he would be right there. ...
I am once again in the Carolinas. I just put off two stops around Columbia, SC and am on my way to Wilmington, NC for my final stop, a pavement roller going to an equipment rental place. They close at 5:00PM Eastern time. I should just make it. I'll get rolling again as soon as I finish my breakfast. When I logged on I saw a message from the Wireless service provider at this chain of truckstops saying that beginning next month they are putting a 20GB cap on the service and if you go over t...
