A bunch of useless crap

I walked up to the hotel lobby earlier to get a cup of coffee. The doctor told me to walk some but not too much. I figure that's about the right distance. The woman working the front desk this morning is not the one who was working yesterday but she also knows me as I have stayed here many times.

She noticed the way I was walking and surmised that I had injured my back. We chatted for a few minutes and I asked about any food places around here that would deliver (besides Dominoes). She said she would check in to it and let me know. A little later she knocked on my door and had menus from three different places; a Chinese place, a sub place, and a rib joint that would all deliver here. Very cool.

She also said that her son would be bringing her lunch to her and would be happy to stop and pick up something for me as well. That's great. Such nice people. I then thought about the fact that I had just been thinking about trying to walk to the grocery store to get a carton of smokes as the couple of packs the truck driver had brought me were just about gone. I asked her if she thought her son would mind picking up a carton for me. She said that he would do that no problem.

I kind of hated to ask really. I don't like to put people to any extra bother on my account, but figured if he was coming here anyway it would save me a long and painful walk.

It's great that there are so many nice people still around in the world. I can't help but think about my experience in that service plaza in Eastern PA where I couldn't even get a fellow driver to bring me something to eat when I couldn't walk at all. It's good to be back in an area where people are friendly and willing to think about someone other than themselves.

I think most people will help out someone in need but are dissuaded from it out of fear these days. A few years back there was an elderly gentelman here who pulled over to help some people on the side of the road with their hood up. Thing was there wasn't anything wrong and they were just posing. They beat him and stole his wallet and left him there. But! funny thing! He had three sons who all worked in the oil field and somehow, someway they caught up with these guys. heh, I don't wanna tell ya what happened next!

But yes, nice people are good to have around.

Yeah, I know there are a lot of scum out there these days. Sadly, they do indeed make people wary of helping someone. I'm glad the old man got a little street justice.

I had a hankering for a nice pipe of tobacco so I put on my shoes and coat and shuffled out to my truck to get a couple of my meerschaums, pipe tobacco, and my box of little cigars for good measure. I retrieved them and was on my way back in when the desk clerk opened the front door and demanded to know what I thought I was doing.

I told her that I was just fetching my pipes and such. She said that I didn't need to be walking around outside in my condition and that if I needed anything I should ask. Just what I need, yet another mother fussing at me.

While typing this her son just knocked and had my smokes. He said he was going to go get his mother some lunch and wanted to know what I wanted. I asked him to just bring me a burger or something from wherever he was going for his mother's lunch.

Now I just have to let my pipes warm to room temperature before trying to smoke one. Lighting up a cold meer is a good way to crack one.

You seem to bring that out in a lot of women.

...and it's good that you're able to ask for help. We guys get criticized a lot for not being able to stop and ask for directions. Sounds like you've gotten past that.

So where are you? Where do you think the friendliest places in the US are? Midwest? South? I just wondered since you get to see everything what you noticed?

I'm glad that someone was able to help you out.

Well, asking for help is not one of my strong suits I tend to not asak for help unless I'm left with no other options.

Mostly the South and the Midwest. Wisconsin is a sort of exception to the rule as these folks seem to be a bunch of Southern folks who made a wrong turn at some point in the past. They have a lot in common with Southerners.
