A bunch of useless crap

What is it that makes some people think they are going to live forever if they just do all of the right things? Yes, it's good to eat sensibly, drink in moderation, and exercise enough to keep the body in reasonable condition. But some people have some unrealistic ideas about these things and wind up spending so much time focused on these sorts of things that they fail to enjoy their life. What could be more sad?

As Samuel Clemmons remarked, I always smoke in moderation. One cigar at a time.

George Burns smoked cigars every day and outlived many doctors who advised him to quit.

I've personally met many more old drunks than old doctors. Personally, I drink beer in moderation (see Clemmons quote).

Jim Fixx, who is credited with starting the jogging craze, died of a heart attack at the age of 52 while out, guess what? Jogging.

Don't smoke? Don't drink? Exercise regularly? Eat right? Guess what? You're still gonna die. Isn't that a laugh?

I would much rather enjoy what time I have allotted to me in this world than spend what will likely be the very same amount of time in some foolish quest to beat the one thing none of us will ever beat; death itself. The only real difference is just how good our corpse will look like at the funeral. But again, here's the joke. After a few months even our corpses will look alike.

Enjoy your non fat, low calorie, low sodium snack. I'm having pizza and beer followed by a good cigar. And I'll enjoy every second of it. Happy yogurt y'all.

Eull Gibbons was the grape nuts freak.  he died in his early 60s.

My Motto:  Living a healthy life is just a slower way to die.

I dont do drugs or poisons.  But I do love BACON!

And the difference is?

Yep, I eat pretty much what I want.

There was a high school coach that died while jogging,  he was in his 30's.  He died of the same thing that caused my heart attacks.  A ripped artery.

I agree with ya Mason,  it's great to enjoy a beer,  good food,  and life!  for some day we all die!  moderation is important.

My gram lived to be 95 and had a glass of wine every night.  She ate real butter,  red meat, eggs, and never exercised a day in her life.  HOWEVER she was a hard working woman.

Yep. Wouldn't it really suck to spend your whole life abstaining from any kind of enjoyment in order to be healthy just to wind up dropping dead from absolutley nothing?

Of course, then again smoking killed my uncle. He was hit by a bus while crossing the street to buy a pack of smokes.

It’s not always a desire to live longer but to live better. A high QOL for someone whom enjoys strenuous activities, healthy living is not a choice. The body is a machine the better you maintain it the better it will run period.

My grandfather lived to 76 and smoked 5 packs a day for 60 of them but that just means he probably would have lived to 90 or more and had a much higher QOL without them.

Almost everyone in the field of aging agrees that within 30 years human life will be extended to 150 years or more and some think it will be a thousand or more. So sticking around as long as possible could get you another 60 plus years, or maybe even imortality.

I have this one life & I'm going to enjoy it!
If the reincarnation folks turnout to be right - I'm going to enjoy the next one too!

So true!

It's good to try to live a healthy life, doing those things in moderation without going crazy about it. It's not fun for me when I'm too tired because I walked down the road or went up the stairs or just walking in general because I've gotten so use to not doing too much activity. The body slows, you get breathless and you're more tired. So getting on a health kick (if you will) does a lot of good. It helps me to become fitter, not necessarily a size 2, that I'll never be!hahaha - and don't want to be!

However, I eat what I want, I just make sure not to have too much of it, listening to my stomach when it says, you're full and drinking more water because when I think I'm hungry I'm just dehydrated from not drinking enough H2O.

Plus I've got to have my beer once in a while. I also like my vino, just not as often as the draft! And these I enjoy in moderation too.

Or maybe he would have stilled died at 76. That's my whole point, we don't really know do we? It's easy to say, and a bit of wishful thinking, that he might have lived until 90. What about all of those people who live those "healthy lives" that drop dead at 50 or 60? Just bad luck? Or maybe we live as long as we live regardless? I'd rather enjoy the time I have.

And as far as the cute little "QOL" thing, enjoyment factors in there far more than the health nuts realize.

Yeah, we should exercise some common sense and take care of ourselves, but common sense is the key word here. What good is it to live a longer life if you aren't actually enjoying it? I'd much rather have a lot of fun for an hour than be bored for a day.

Always love the black or white arguments....it's so much easier than trying to maintain a sense of moderation despite any momentary swings in either direction.

Do you have any sort of point that in any way even remotely pertains to this thread or are you simply a babbling idiot?

Of course we don’t know when we’re going to die and he may still have died at 76 as you say but I guarantee he would have been able to climb a flight of stairs without having to stop and wheeze for several minutes. And that was when he was 50. The last 20 years of his life he couldn’t do a lot of the things he wanted to do as a direct result of cigarettes.

What about all of those people who live those "healthy lives" that drop dead at 50 or 60? Just bad luck?

No it’s called genetic defects and or disease and it can’t be corrected with exercise or a healthy diet. If there’s nothing wrong with you then being a “heath nut” will make you live a longer and healthier life no exceptions.

I smoked for several years when I was younger and about 5 years after I quit I started feeling bad then I developed a cough and it didn’t go away. Eight weeks later I finally went to the doctor and got a chest x-ray, it was clear but let me tell you for a few weeks there I thought something I had done to myself was going to cause my death and that was the mother of all regrets.
