Considering Going Back On The Road

The grocery chain at whose distribution center my company is contracted to provide security is up for sale. The most recent news story indicates that the sale may be finalized in the very near future. There are also indications that they have no interest in the operations, but rather in the real estate nationwide. This of course means that the distribution center will likely be closing down.

As our company doesn't have any other posts here in town and I have no intention of moving to Tamps or St Pete, I must consider my alternatives. I had received an email recently from my former trucking emplyer expressing a desire for me to return to work for them. So I called him today to discuss the possibility and indicated that I would call him again after the first of the year.

I am not entirely sure if my hip is going to allow me to return to my former occupation, but I may have to try anyway. And I do miss the paychecks. It's nice being home every night, but perhaps that isn't the most important thing right now.

I dunno. I just know for sure that if this current job falls through I will have to do something for decent income and trucking for my former employer definately paid well. I figure I'll either do ok, or become a permanent cripple.

That's a tough one, Mason. I don't have any advice for you...i wish I did.

I know that you're not going to do anything rash, and that you'll eventually make the best decision for you. If you DO decide to go back on the road and you're ever on I-64 , let me know!

That's cool MM. Will be tied up with family Christmas stuff this weekend but maybe we can get together for coffee some evening before ya head back.

Easy, I'm not a fan of cities. I did part of my growing up in Tampa.

Also, I just bought a place here. I don't own a car and don't want to buy one so commuting is out. I wouldn't want to deal with all that traffic anyway. If I can't get there by bicycle, I don't go.

I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. In a way I do miss being on the road. And in a way I am happy to not be on the road any more. Either way I do miss the money.

If I do go back I am considering running 3 weeks out and spending one week at home. That wouldn't be so bad. Previously I would spend 6 - 8 months out and a couple weeks at home. I really don't want to go back to that.

I am always on 64! But I think it is a different section.

I know that those security Jobs dont pay a lot, and that driving usually pays a lot more. Whatever your decision, the best of luck with it.

No, they don't pay much. As supervisor, I am making more than a guard makes, but it's still not exactly big money. When driving, I made as much in a week as I currently make in a month. And if this job dries up and I have to take another guard position, the drop in pay would be a very bad thing. Highly unlikely I could land another captain's position here in town that pays even close to what I get now. (I'm one of the highest paid captains in the company. highest paygrade available for a site supervisor)

I was making $12 a hour when I had to quit. That's a LOT compared to what a guard makes, but when you consider that I was carrying a gun and had a job that put me in harms way on a regular basis (not as much as a cop, but it was pretty routine)...well, it's not a whole lot.
