Early this week my boss called me to let me know I needed to plan on getting off work early today to attend a company management awards banquet. I him-hawed around about it, and he said several times that "it would be in your best interest to be there", "it would really benefit you to be there", and "you'll really be glad you went" type stuff.
He doesn't normally talk this way and is usually very direct. I suspect, because he was obviously trying to hide something, that either they are giving out a Christmas bonus at this thing, or that I am receiving some sort of recognition. As I've done nothing spectacular deserving recognition, I suspect the former.
But I really hate these sorts of things. Yesterday he called to make certain that I was indeed planning to attend, at which point I told him that I wasn't able to secure transportation and it was just too far to get there on my bicycle. To be honest it's only 30 miles, well within bicycle range. He said for me to be ready, got directions to my home, and said he would come and pick me up. *sigh*, foiled again.
So I am now sitting here, in coat and tie, awaiting his arrival to take me to the dinner and really not looking forward to it. The food should be good though, as it's being held at a rather upscale place. I just hope it doesn't last too terribly long.
