A bunch of useless crap
Promoted From Officer To Captain
Published on October 12, 2005 By MasonM In Blogging
I got a call this morning from the "big boss" in our office. He filled me in on some personnel changes, shift changes, and assorted other work related items. Now, I was still on my first cup of coffee and still not quite awake so I kept wondering "why is he calling to tell me all of this?"

Towards the end of the conversation he got around to the "oh, by the way, I'm promoting you to Captain (supervisor) effective immediately." ummm, ok.

I've been doing the job all along anyway, so I figure I may as well get paid for it. It's not exacty a huge raise, a buck seventy five, but right now every little bit helps.

Congratulations!

I know that you were kind of mulling the position over with some disdain, but look at it this way...now you're getting something a little extra in return. Just make the best of the situation and go with the flow.

Thanks.

I think it will be ok, and the extra money will come in handy. Most of the people there are fairly low maintenance so hopefully it won't be too bad.

When I was Supervisor, I had to do rosters, time cards, and personnel management as WELl as field training. I had 20 people working under me, all of whom had specific times and days that they could not work on and miscellaneous personal problems....which made them all high maintenance.
Glad to hear about your promotion AND that you have low manitenance folks working for you!

Dharma, yeah it's pretty much the same here. As for "low maintenance", I meant that most of them do their job without the need for direct, over their shoulder supervision.

There are always going to be the personalities and training issues to contend with as well as the routine administrative tasks. I can deal with those easily enough.

The biggest challenge at the moment is all of the new hires I'm having to train. I've had four start this week and am expecting two more to start over the next few days. One of the new hires is going to be replacing a person who is the "weak link". The person being replaced isn't a bad guy, he's just not well organized and is unsuited for the monsterously busy post we man. He's going to be transferred to another, less busy post where he will be better suited.

Ah well, another day, another 78 cents.

I know. That's what I meant about some of my folks being 'high' maintenance. We had one post that was pretty much a no-brainer, so I used to set people out there that couldn't handle the patrol and people posts. You have to have a certain kind of personality to deal with drunks and people who can't behave themselves, and a lot of these guys just didn't have the gumption for it, so they got put on out a less busy post until I could help them bring out their more assertive side.

The new hires usually rode with me one or two nights before they got sent out on their lonesome. it achieved 2 things - it allowed them to get a feel for the job and what was going to be expected of them, and it allowed me to get a feel for their personality and methods so that I could figure out where they'd be best posted at.

Man, now I'm reminiscing about how much I loved that job. I'm never going to be able to do anything like that again.....that kind of sucks.

Congratulations old bean!  That took what, about 6 months?  I am very impressed.

Dharma, yeah personalities mean a lot in this line of work. I now have 5 new hires I'm still sorting through.

Guy, actually I've been working for this company for 80 days. They promoted me "officially" on my 79th day here. I've ben doing the job since day one.

Today was my second "official" day as supervisor and I had to fire someone. I really hate firing people. It sucks.
