New Guy Knows Bikes

I like him already

I am training a new hire at work. He arrived yesterday afternoon, saw my bike parked in front of the guardshack and asked "Who's recumbent?" I liked him right off as most people ask "What kind of bike is that?"

He's a retired programmer and so knows computers, rides a hybrid bicycle, all three of his sons are also in computers and cyclists. A lot of our conversations switched back and forth between computers and cycling. It's nice to have someone there who speaks my language LOL.

Some of our recent hires have been problematic at best. This guy is mature, seems responsible, and very coachable. I usually reserve judgement on new hires for a few days, but I feel that this guy is going to work out fine.

I'm training him to work my current shift as I will soon be moving to the supervisor's shift.

As for problematic employees, three quit over the weekend. Two of them actually stole the refrigerator and coffee pot from the guardshack. These three quitting isn't such a great loss as we were planning on firing them anyway, but the timing could have been better. We mananged to cover their shifts no problem (I did a 12 hour shift yesterday to cover part of it).

In a way they did us a favor stealing the items as the District Manager showed up yesterday with a brand new fridge twice as big as the one they stole, and a new, much nicer coffee pot.

The District Manager is holding one of their paychecks in the district office so as to force him to make a personal appearance to pick it up, and I am holding one of the other's check pending the return of said stolen items.

Anyway, I'm glad they're gone as they were a royal pain in the neck (actually a few feet lower) and their absence will make supervising the post much less of a headache. And it looks like I'm getting a much better employee in the bargain.

I think we are going to have to call you Pollyanna! You are always finding the good in any bad news!

Congratulations on the new recruit. I guess since he is retired, it was not PCs that was his specialty. My mother was in computers all her life, and she refuses to get one.

LOL. Well you know what they say: "Every silver lining has a cloud."

No, he wasn't into PCs although he owns them now. He started as a BASIC programmer, and then COBOL, and some others. Industrial stuff.

You mean you haven't retired yet???

So what language are you programming in now?

I'm currently learning Python. (I know. is more scripting than programming)

Not the boss yet, officially, but am pretty much doing the job already.

The raise isn't all that much, but right now I'll take what I can get.
