A bunch of useless crap
Published on June 29, 2005 By MasonM In Blogging
I have been posting on cycling forums for a while now, and recently joined one specifically for recumbent bikes as I am planning to buy a bent sometime soon.

I had posted regarding my current physical limitations and requested advice and recommendations on what brands/models might be best to check out that are in my price range. The folks at the site were very helpful and I received a lot of good advice in a very short period of time as well as several private messages regarding used bikes and suggestions.

One person in particular, who makes his living building custom frames for home-built bents, messaged me and offered to ship me a custom built frame for just the cost of shipping (about $40). Wow, I was floored by the generosity of this complete stranger. We are talking about a frame he typically sells for around $500, and he was willing to just give it to me. Unbelievable!

As I am lacking in tools and am also in dire need of a rideable bike as soon as possible since my current ride is on it's last legs, I declined his generous offer, thanking him for his kind hearted generosity. It would simply take me too long to build my own bike.

The idea of building my own really appeals to me, and I may purchase a frame from this gentleman at some point in the future when I am in a position to take on a project bike. I do know that if I ever need a bike frame for a bent, it will definitely be purchase from this wonderful person.

I should say here that I've also received some offers of assistance from some of our fellow JUers, and really appreciated those as well.

It warms the heart to know that there are still people out there who are willing to help out a fellow human being.

Isn't it great when someone goes out of their way to make our lifes a little easier--especially when they don't have to...

I love hearing stories like this--reaffirms my faith in humanity.

Good luck getting the bike you want, Mason. I saw the ones you posted and they all look cool--of course, I have no cycling knowledge, so my assessment is based completely on looks!

Keep us posted--I'm very happy to hear that you are doing better.

I think I would enjoy that more than the riding it. If/when you ever do that, tell me all about it!

I feel the same way. Once I'm on my feet a little better (figuratively AND literally) I'll definately be taking a stab at building one. Might make a cool blog series of it.

Thanks, and yeah I know I should have. But since I'm not in a position to do anything more than just store the frame away for some later time, I felt like it would be taking advantage of his generosity under false pretenses. I just couldn't live with myself if I did that to such an obviously nice person.

I appreciate all the comments.

Tomorrow I'm going down to the local bent shop. The owner emailed me and said he had a couple of Sun EZ-1 demo models I might want to look at. He said he would be willing to sell me one at a very reasonable price as they are technically used, so it's worth going and having a look and a test ride. (That's the fun part )

If nothing else I'll get to meet the shop owner and spend some time getting to know him and checking out some of the cool bikes. From what I have learned, he's well known and has an excellent reputation nation-wide so I really want to get to know him.

He also, knowing I'm on a very small budget, said I could test ride as many different bikes as I wanted even if I can't afford the nice ones right now. So it might be a fun time.

This is a Sun EZ-1. Hopefully one of the demo models will be nice for me and I'll be buying it.
