A bunch of useless crap
Preparing to start new job
Published on June 4, 2005 By MasonM In Blogging
I just got home from a little shopping and a haircut in preparation for starting my new job next week. I bought some food to take for lunch as well as a fresh can of shoe polish.

Whenever I start a new job I like to pay extra special attention to the little details. Well polished shoes, clothes neatly pressed, fresh haircut, and a little extra attention to personal grooming like moustache trim, a little extra close shave, etc... The little details may not even be overtly noticed by the people on the new job, but they give an over all impression of neatness and professionalism.

While I always take care to present a good appearance on the job, that first couple of days can be crucial to how you are perceived by your boss and those with whom you work and it pays off to take the time to pay extra attention to the little things. They really do count.

Mason: In your new job, apearance counts for a hell of a lot. When I was shift supervisor I required that all my officers be well turned out and present a professional appearance. I sent a couple of people home once because they showed up unshaven and with unironed uniforms. We took enough flack for being rent a cops as it was without perpetuating that impression by being untidy and unhygenic.

Good luck to you....but I'm sure you'll do fine!

Thanks MM and Mano, appreciate the kind thoughts.

Dharma: I have never understood people who show up for work looking like bums. When I was in management I had a few technicians working for me that would show up for work looking like crap. We had a clearly outlined policy regarding appearance and wearing of uniforms. Being sent home without pay a couple of times would usually do the trick, along with threatening their continued employment. Although my position didn't require a uniform, I wore the same one they wore every day (except when attending corporate meetings and governemnt council meetings).

You would think adults would have at least some concept of professional appearance. It really does make a difference.

Congratulations on the new job Mason. The little things count a whole lot, and knowing that they count makes a huge difference and speaks volumes of you as a person.

Best of luck on your first day!

Mason.

Congratulations! I missed your "official" "I got a job" announcement, so I'm going to assume from the context it's the security position?

Anyway, hope it goes well!

Thanks Floozie, I appreciate it.

Gid: yeah it's the security officer position. Not really the job I was hoping for but it's better than nothing right now. They hired me mainly because they are in need of people with computer skills.

I know what you mean.  I wore coat and ties to a casual dress job for about 7 weeks after I started.  My Boss use to make fun of me about that for the longest time, but it made an impression!

Now I dont wear the monkey suit, but I am well established too.
