A bunch of useless crap

Most of the time my preferred style of dress is pretty simple. Jeans, a shirt, sometimes it's a t-shirt other times not, boots, and some sort of hat. My hats are pretty varied and range from the simple ball cap to a fedora, a panama hat, to a western style "cowboy" hat of which I own several styles.

Ok, I like hats, what can I say?

But sometimes I like to wear a suit with or without a tie. Why? Because I appreciate the look of a decent suit. It feels good to put on nice looking clothes. Not for the sake of vanity as much as just projecting a different "look" or style. I normally wear a fedora with a suit. Gotta have the hat ya know.

I have been known to wear a suit in some pretty inappropriate situations, "just because". OK, I'll admit sometimes it's just to mess with people's heads.

One trucking company I worked for decided they wanted all of the drivers to wear a uniform for the sake of professional appearance. Now anyone who knows truckers knows that they are a pretty independent bunch of people and pretty hard headed as well.

I am no exception. There was no way I was going to wear that dorky looking uniform. Not gonna happen. Instead I started wearing a suit and tie every day. While trucking. A good many of my customers were blown away by this of course. Many of them expressed how much they liked it. I was even mistaken for a salesman on more than one occassion.

And I did have fun with it too. Often, while sitting at the counter in some truckstop I would get into a conversation with the other drivers. They would assume that I wasn't a driver based on my chosen mode of dress. Somewhere into the conversation I would always make some off hand remark about my load, logbooks, or the DOT. It was always fun to see the reactions. Even had one young guy say that if he saw me on the fuel island dressed like that he would intentionally spill diesel in my direction. My reaction was that's fine as long as you don't mind my taking the $1200 out of your ass.

A lot of drivers, especially the older ones really liked it and more than one thanked me for "bringing some class" to our industry.

After about 6 months of this my supervisor, the Director of Operations decided he had had enough of it. He had been having a great deal of trouble getting the drivers to wear the uniform and was cracking down. This schmuck actually had the nerve to try and write me up for not wearing the uniform on the grounds of not having a "professional appearance".

After I raised enough hell and took it to the owner of the company he decided to let the whole thing drop and issued a memo to all drivers that the uniform was optional as long as the drivers wore clean clothes without holes in them at customer facilities.

I retired the suits after that. The dry cleaning was killing me.

I still enjoy getting duded up in a nice suit, just because. Somehow it just feels good to put on some nice duds once in a while for no special reason. I have a special spot in my heart for the days when men always wore suits and a hat. It's only been in the past few decades that this has really changed.

How about you? What do you normally wear? Do you ever get dressed up "just because"? Why or why not?

Suits?? NEVER! At formal events a nice pair of slacks and a button down shirt... Suits are Not me.

That's seems to be the sentiment of a lot of people these days.

Thanks for playing.

Yes, I do dress up, just because I can or want to.

I'm a big fan of skirts and dresses in the summer.  Yesterday, for example...I wore a knee length skirt and a halter top and everyone kept asking me if I was going to work or I had an appointment.  When I said i didn't they asked me why I was 'dressed up'.  What I was wearing wasn't particularly dressy to me; I wear suits and business attire to work so a halter top to me is very casual.

I wear makeup most every day too.  Even if I'm slobbing around in jeans and a ball cap I still wear a little mascara and lip gloss...it just makes me feel better, dig?  I feel more 'together' if I'm dressed nicely and feel like I look presentable.  Besides, I want to look nice for D when he's here....I hear women complaining all the time about how their husband's aren't attracted to them anymore and how they don't understand why...when they never dress up, never do anything with their hair or face and wear sweat pants and baggy T's all day every day.

So yes, Mason, I do like to dress up, and I do so frequently!  I do have a question for you though...cologne, perfume and body spray: everyday wear or just a 'special occasion' kind of thing?

I agree, it does seem to change one's feeling about themself. Strange reall, if you think about it as we're still the same person, but true.

I guess that depends on the person. I normally wear a SMALL amount of cologne or aftershave when I go out in public (or when I shave). I really hate people, men or women, who seem to have used a whole bottle of the stuff.

As far as on other people, as long as they don't smell like they haven't had a bath in a month I don't really care one way or the other.

Wow Mason, I would have love to see you in one of your hats. You in a suit sounds real good too! Me, I love to dress up. Having worked in very formal places for most of my life, I had to. And I quite enjoy it, suits, separates and let me tell you about the accessories. I'm an accesories lover! Nowadays I don't have to wear a suit to work anymore. If fact I had to learn to "de-suit" if that's a word and not get too dressed up living and working here in FL.

I've learned that I can't hide my true self, because it was very hard when I first got here. So now I just let my style come through all the time, to heck with what others might think, because they always comment on what I wear as if they've never seen someone put themself together before (stylewise I mean!)

Anyway, good blog!

Yeah, I live in Florida too and the general style down here is very casual and laid back, which I am too most of the time.

I would have love to see you in one of your hats.

That's easy, just check out dharma's Show and Tell Revisited posting. (Warning: I take no responsibility for broken monitors) Link

Yes, we are...I think it all has to do with confidence.

I have this stuff that i really like....it's a very mild ginger and white tea smell, and I use the soap and body lotion too. You have to get right up on me to smell it....

I really hate people, men or women, who seem to have used a whole bottle of the stuff.

There's this one cashier at the BX who douses herself with this nasty, cheap-o musk perfume and it makes me nauseated and headache-y to be near her for more than a few seconds. I avoid her line like the plague!

Don't even get me started on that...there's NO excuse for being stinky.

You in a suit sounds real good too!

I think so as well!

My 'style' breaks through all the time. I love vintage clothes and funky accessories!

I love vintage clothes

As do I. I have a couple of suits circa 1940s and I found a grey Stetson fedora made in 1939 that was still new in the box in a small men's shop in Greensboro,NC a couple of years ago. Amazingly, it was even my size.
