Re: Survey of third planet, star 749375ab
Commander;
Our survey of the third planet in the 749375ab system has proved to be only partially successful. The dominant species on the planet, who refer to themselves generally as "humans", are a bipedal species which at first appear to be at least nominally intelligent. They are possessed of the ability to communicate with each other, but observations indicate that different groups seem to use different sound combinations to do so. This may be a herd instinct identifying members of one herd from another.
They build large, complex cities, primitive machines, manufacturing plants, and have even developed a primitive space program. All of these things would indicate some level of intelligence. However, after further study we have determined that these are but some sort instinctual activities, albeit very advanced.
Observation of the species' social interactions has demonstrated that they do not in fact possess more than rudimentary intellect. They seem to be somewhat social animals in that they tend to live in herds concentrated in the instinctual city structures but they are predatory in nature.
These animals regularly prey not only on other species on the planet, often eradicating them, but on their own species as well and indeed not uncommonly their own offspring. Their predatory instincts combined with the unusual technical instincts have cause these animals to create rather crude weapons in order to more effectively prey on each other.
We had earlier surmised that these predatory actions within the species is somehow related to their mating habits as it seems to occupy a great deal of their energies so no other conclusion makes sense as propogation is the primary drive of any primitive species.
Upon more study it now appears that there is some genetic defect in the species and, instead of propogation, they seem to be instinctually driven to the extinction of the species. This defective genetic drive has gone so far as to cause them to develop primitive nuclear devices the only purpose of which could be the extinction of the species. So far this genetic drive to extinction has not fully developed, but we would expect it to do so in due course.
We should be able to colonize this small planet in the near future after some time spent cleaning up the planet's soil, water, and atmospere of waste once this "human" species has eradicated itself. All indicators suggest that this self-eradication should take place very soon.
