A bunch of useless crap
Let's Get More Real Here

Has anyone else seen these anti-racism ads on television? They are set in normal every day settings, a restaurant, an elevator, etc. and normally have one caucasion person exhibiting racist behavior and someone else speaking up about it.

OK, the first time I saw one of these ads I thought "well that's a good thing". But after seeing several of them I noticed a pattern. It seems that racists only come in one color: white. Not a single one of these seemingly well intentioned ads ever depicts any sort of racist behavior from any other race of people but whites.

Are these people living in some other world where this is actually the case? Or do they honestly believe that racism is a whites-only problem? Or do they simply believe that racism is "understandable" when it's coming from someone of a non-white race?

I'm sorry folks but racist attitudes, actions, and behavior is NOT acceptable from anyone. If you're going to beat that drum, at least demonstrate that you truly believe the song you're singing and be more realistic about it. Portraying racism as a whites-only problem not only detracts from your message, but also makes you lose a lot of credibility. If you really want to be a positive influence in the fight against racism, fight it on all fronts. Otherwise you appear to be racist yourselves.

Two things are happening here.

1) You tread on dangerous ground anytime you cast anyone but White people in a bad light. There are a few exceptions of course, but not where racism is concerned. Arabs can be villains, but only if they are international terrorists. Italians can only be villains if they are Mafia, and then they still have to have a few loveable family members for ever cold blooded killer. Latinos can only be villains if they are from a Central American country or Cuba, and then only if they are drug kingpins.

2) It's yet another example of my saying, "Victim-Respect". These PSAs draw definitive lines between victim and perpetrator. If they were to show anyone but White Males being racists they run the risk if blurring that seperates victim from perpetrator.

Good On Ya for your critical thinking while watching this propaganda!!

It reminds me of the time I heard a Sergeant Major (who happened to be a Black man) tell us that minorities just can't catch a break in the U.S. Army. Excuse me Mr. Top of the Non Commissioned Officer ranks, you're kidding... right?? ;~D

Actually in one of them the "offender" is a white woman. Still, the whole thing comes off as pretty racist to me.

As for that Sgt-Major, some folks can't shed that mentality no matter what. I once knew a guy who was always going on about how people didn't like him and he never got a break because he was black. I heard this crap every day for over a year and finally one night while we were drinking a beer I turned to him and said "No, people don't like you because you're an asshole."

Believe it or not he did give that some thought and even improved his attitude somewhat but it was still there, just below the surface.

I concur.

Good article, Mason. It seems to me that racism comes in any flavor, not just vanilla.

Here's a good example: the people that live across the street from me are black. The chick is super super nice, and their twin boys are the politest kids you could ever want to meet. The dude is a Tech Sgt, the same as D. He was outside washing his car the weekend before last, and he had his stereo playing some rap tunes pretty loud. Every other word was 'nigger' or 'bitch', with a few 'crackers''ho's' and 'pussies' thrown in for good measure.

Now, had I, a white person, been out there playing music that used those words, or has I used those words myself.....do you honestly think that would have been cool? That they'd have just turned a blind eye to that? I don't. I think that all hell would have broken loose.

I think that it's bullshit that we as caucasians are accused of racisim at the drop of a hat. Like I said, racisim comes in all kinds of colors.

Good article mason, its just not politically correct to portray anybody but a white person as racist. P.C. is destroying america, slowly.

Honestly, this goes beyond sentiments of political correctness. From my experience, your average white liberal is the one who will fear saying certain things because of political correctness. When you start coming across non-white liberals and white left-wing radicals, then more of the dogmatic arguments begin to surface about white power structures. That's why there are often cries of racism even when a black cop shoots a black criminal. In the case of the radical left-wingers, capitalism will probably be indicted too. The definitions of terms in left-wing philosophy don't tend to match up with what society at large understands them to mean. Racism, imperialism, privilege, and workers mean vastly different things to extreme left-wing radicals.

Mason,

I beg to differ. In the series of commercials you refer to, of which I've seen three, there is one where the racist perpetrator is an older Asian man....it does seem however that all of the "Victims" tend to be black.....

So it goes.....

White guy wanders into the projects at nigh. Gets mugged. Black mugger calls him a honkey in the process. Mugger gets charged with a hate crime.

Can you imagine the uproar? Al Sharpton would be marching before the ink on the charge was dry.

A white mugger calls his victim the "n" word and it's guarenteed.

Dynosaur, I guess I haven't seen the one you are referring to. But, in the first one I saw the "victim" was a hispanic waiter, all of the others they have been black.

So you're saying they have actually potrayed an "offender" as someone other than white? OK, cool. I'll have to keep my eye out for that one. Maybe they're more balanced than I thought.

But, I'm still betting we won't see any where the "victim" is white.

Black leadership say they cannot be racist as they are not in power!  Righhhttttt.

You are 100% correct.  Racist may be white, but Calypso Louis is a racist, and he aint white.

Now, had I, a white person, been out there playing music that used those words, or has I used those words myself.....do you honestly think that would have been cool? That they'd have just turned a blind eye to that? I don't. I think that all hell would have broken loose.

An amusing if OT Movie was when Chris Rock played a new version of 'Here comes Mr. Jourdan' as a black man inhabiting a White body.  It epitomized exactly what you are saying.
