A bunch of useless crap

On January 9th I had my bi-annual D.O.T. physical and failed due to high blood pressure readings. As a result I wish ony issued a 90 day medical card, which expires on April 9th. Yesterday I finally got around to seeing a doctor for a follow up. My blood pressure was still high.

As I haven't had a real physical in years and am now 50 years old the doc gave me a full physical including blood work. Barring the results of the lab work next week he proclaimed me in reasonably good health with the exception of the blood pressure thing, which he says just come with age for some people.

I am now on blood pressure medication so we can get it down to the D.O.T. acceptable level before my card expires. Once over that hurdle we are going to see if it's possible to get it down long term without the drugs as I despise the idea of being dependant upon medication.

I am now just hoping there are no unexpected surprises from the lab next week. Due to my diet I expect my cholesteral is likely on the high side so that in itself wouldn't be much of a surprise, but they are also running tests for liver and kidney function, prostate cancer, thyroid function, etc. I'll know about all of that early next week.

I now have an automatic blood pressure monitor to check my pressure twice a day. It stores the readings, along with time and date, so the doc can take a look at the readings over time. Just something else to hasssle with on the road, and something else to take up space in the truck (although it isn't all that big).

On the up side, I took the first pill yesterday after filling the prescription and when I took my pressure reading this morning it was well within the normal range. Of course one reading right after getting out of bed doesn't mean much in itself so I'll have a little better idea when I take another one late this afternoon or early evening.

Oh Brother, I went through all this a few years ago...in the end I wound up on a front-end loader for a few months, then the lay-offs started.  I wound up taking the early retirement and here I am.  I wish you better luck than I had with all that crap.

Thanks BFD. Sorry it didn't turn oout well for you. I've been taking my blood pressure at least twice a day and it is slowly trending down, so perhaps the pills will do the trick for now.

On the down side the pills are giving me a mild headache and I am feeling tired as hell. The doc did say I would probably experience some side effects at first but they should pass in a few days. I sure as hell hope so as this tiredness is making it hard for me to do my job.

Wish we knew what causes high blood pressure, other than breathing air for too long.  Just comes out of the blue most of the time.  We know how to manipulate/treat it but not how to 'cure' it.  Hang in there - most initial side effects will fade.  Oddly enough, DOT is tighter about blood pressure than the FAA.

Thanks, Daiwa. Yeah, the DOT can be a real pain in the ass at times.

Good morning Mason.  I could say welcome to the club but I won't.  I hope you have as good luck with your pill a day as I have.  The side effects were gone pretty quick and all is under control.  Please let us know how the rest of it comes out.  And the best of luck.  Maybe try some yoga to work on that naturally with the lower blood pressure.  If you can knit you can do yoga.  I will be checking in more often and want to read GOOD NEWS.  Now, about that smoking.........

Thanks, Judy. My appointment is at 2:30 this afternoon. I'll know then whether I still have a job or will be joining the ranks of the unemplyed and homeless.

When I checked my blood pressure this morning it was very good on my monitor so hopefully it will be good at the doctor's office this afternoon.

Would holding your breath help?

I am not as religious as you about the BP - I just have it taken every 8 weeks when I give blood.  So I get a longer average and it does stay down.

Remember the old Lawrence Welk Commercials for Geritol?  Yea, we laughed at them until they became us!

Yeah, I know what you mean. Still not taking Geritol though.

Now that I am past the critical point I will do the blood pressure readings once a week just to keep track.
