A bunch of useless crap
Published on April 22, 2011 By MasonM In Blogging

It has been a tough couple of weeks. Work has been busy and I have been running my ass off. That's a good thing for my wallet, but very tiring.

I wrote in an earlier article about someone hitting my truck in a truck stop. Well, less than two weeks later it happened again. This time the scumbag took off, leaving my front bumper sticking out two feet on the passenger side. Geez!

Well, yesterday I spent all day moving out of that truck and into a newer one. I really hate changing trucks, it is an amazing amount of work. You would be surprised at just how much crap one can accumulate in a truck over time. During the move I tossed a lot of stuff into the dumpster.

The good thing is that the newer truck has a 13 speed transmission, which I prefer over the 10 speed I had been driving. It really makes a difference when trying to pull a hill with a heavy load.

The bad thing is, come around August I will have to do it again. The boss has ordered me a custom built truck from the factory and it should be here around that time. Knowing this in advance, I won't even bother to unpack most of my stuff. I'll just leave most of it boxed and bagged up to make the move to the brand new truck easier.

I will be hauling a fire truck to a military base in Georgia to deliver on Tuesday. Right now I am in a motel room enjoying a few brews and just getting some rest. I can lave out tomorrow morning and run down as far as the KY/TN line over the weekend. I will have to wait until Monday morning to cross into TN as they don't allow over sized loads to move through their state on Sunday. No big deal as I don't need to be in GA until Tuesday.

The rest will do me some good. The crappy cold, wet weather in Wisconsin is playing hell with my arthritis, and the southern states have been playing hell with my allergies. Ah well, it's always something, right?

I have a feeling this is going to be a very busy year. Normally, the first quarter of the year is out slowest but this time around our business was up 30%. If history is any guide, that means the next few months are going to get really, really busy. We have even had to turn down contracts because we are pressed to cover the workload we already have. That's a very good sign.

After the past couple of really crappy years, I am looking forward to getting back to making decent money once again. I have been making enough to survive, but that has been pretty much it. If business revenues do pick up this year as I expect, I might actually be able to save a bit of cash for a change instead of living paycheck to paycheck. That would be nice.

I have noticed the past couple of months that come payday I actually still have some cash left from the previous payday instead of scrounging for loose change to buy a hotdog the day before payday. With any luck within a year or so I might actually be back up to the respectable income level I was making before the economy tanked.

Ah well, time for another beer.

My theory is that demand can remain pent-up only for so long, that equipment can only be maintained for so long, that duty-cycles can be stretched only so far.  A pick-up in business was inevitable, but its timing unpredictable.

Glad it's finally come for ya.  Though I think it is driven less by 'growth' than 'maintenance'.

Well, you may be partially correct, but my business is a very good barometer of the overall economy as we tend to see changes sooner than the so-called "economic markers" that many seem to track. As I am in specialized hauling, I am not quite as severely affected as the general freight sector, but I am affected just the same.

A lot of our increase has been in international shipping where other countries are buying more specialized products from here. A huge amount of our business has been going to ports the past few months, which means other nations are finding themselves in a position to spend money. That is a good sign.

I think the 'maintenance' phase is always a prelude to the 'growth' phase, though again the timing between them is unpredictable, so I suspect you are correct in the general sense and it's good news.  One of my other theories: What's good for truckers is good for the rest of us.

Nothing in life is free, and I guess the good news of better business is tempered by the 2 trucks you have to move into.  But then I suspect your boss feels the same way you do, and he wants you in a reliable truck!

If the trucks are reliable, I do not think you will mind the 2 moves.

Have a safe trip.

It is different from a year ago isn't it?  Hope you can save a buck or two and that you don't have too much down time but enough to stay healthy.  As always, stay safe.  Checking in from the high mountain desert.

Thanks, folks. It has been really busy, but that sure beats the way things were last year. I am currently in Sioux City, IA.

Looks like those of us already working are going to get busier for awhile before much new hiring occurs - despite what you're seeing, the UE rate is back up to 9.0%.  Still a lot of slack in the system.

True. The sad thing is, there are a lot of places hiring, I am seeing signs all over the place, and according to one manager I spoke with, people don't seem interested in getting a job at the moment. We are currently looking for a few drivers and are having a hard time finding them.

See what extended UE benefits will do for us?  The vote-buyers in DC are truly brilliant, aren't they?

I wish I could live off of UE benefits.  But they were anemic in my state, so I always (the 2 times I got laid off and the third time I saw it coming and cut it off at the pass) hustled to find a new job fast.  But that was back in the days of billion dollar budgets, not trillion dollar ones.

Hmmmm, imagine that, finding a new job. Who woulda thunk it?
