It has been a tough couple of weeks. Work has been busy and I have been running my ass off. That's a good thing for my wallet, but very tiring.
I wrote in an earlier article about someone hitting my truck in a truck stop. Well, less than two weeks later it happened again. This time the scumbag took off, leaving my front bumper sticking out two feet on the passenger side. Geez!
Well, yesterday I spent all day moving out of that truck and into a newer one. I really hate changing trucks, it is an amazing amount of work. You would be surprised at just how much crap one can accumulate in a truck over time. During the move I tossed a lot of stuff into the dumpster.
The good thing is that the newer truck has a 13 speed transmission, which I prefer over the 10 speed I had been driving. It really makes a difference when trying to pull a hill with a heavy load.
The bad thing is, come around August I will have to do it again. The boss has ordered me a custom built truck from the factory and it should be here around that time. Knowing this in advance, I won't even bother to unpack most of my stuff. I'll just leave most of it boxed and bagged up to make the move to the brand new truck easier.
I will be hauling a fire truck to a military base in Georgia to deliver on Tuesday. Right now I am in a motel room enjoying a few brews and just getting some rest. I can lave out tomorrow morning and run down as far as the KY/TN line over the weekend. I will have to wait until Monday morning to cross into TN as they don't allow over sized loads to move through their state on Sunday. No big deal as I don't need to be in GA until Tuesday.
The rest will do me some good. The crappy cold, wet weather in Wisconsin is playing hell with my arthritis, and the southern states have been playing hell with my allergies. Ah well, it's always something, right?
I have a feeling this is going to be a very busy year. Normally, the first quarter of the year is out slowest but this time around our business was up 30%. If history is any guide, that means the next few months are going to get really, really busy. We have even had to turn down contracts because we are pressed to cover the workload we already have. That's a very good sign.
After the past couple of really crappy years, I am looking forward to getting back to making decent money once again. I have been making enough to survive, but that has been pretty much it. If business revenues do pick up this year as I expect, I might actually be able to save a bit of cash for a change instead of living paycheck to paycheck. That would be nice.
I have noticed the past couple of months that come payday I actually still have some cash left from the previous payday instead of scrounging for loose change to buy a hotdog the day before payday. With any luck within a year or so I might actually be back up to the respectable income level I was making before the economy tanked.
Ah well, time for another beer.
