On Saturday Donner Pass, I-80 in California, was getting pounded by snow. The only route open to me to get out of the state was to go south and cut over to I-15 and go out through Las Vegas. It added an extra 200 miles to my trip but was the only option other than sitting for several days.
Nevada and Arizona were no problem but before I got too far into Utah and I ran into crappy weather. It started as rain and as I went along it progressed from sleet to full out snow. The roads were passable but very slick. The high winds only added to the fun.
I finally made it as far as Grand Junction, Colorado. It was snowing here as well. The chain law was in effect on Vail Pass and so I was forced to stop. I checked into a hotel to wait it out.
It's far too early in the year for a Winter storm of this size. It is pretty much affecting most of the Western states at this point.
It looks like I should catch a break a little later this morning and with any luck they will lift the chain law some time after the sun rises. At least I hope so. I can't afford to sit here for too long. I am already a day behind schedule as it is.
But then, I can't afford to wreck my truck either.
