A bunch of useless crap

It’s no secret that I love my pipes and pipe tobacco. I’ve found a forum all about pipes and pipe tobacco and the people there are friendly and civil in the extreme, even when they disagree. I find this very refreshing.

It’s nice to find a web community where the people go out of their way to be civil and supportive at all times. It’s a breath of fresh air in a medium that can be anything but civil. But then, pipe smokers in general tend to be a friendly, supportive lot anyway. I’ve never yet met an unfriendly pipe smoker. Sure, there are probably a few out there, I’ve just never met them.

I ran across a fellow trucker in a truck stop a while back who was smoking a pipe. I asked him what blend of tobacco he was smoking as I really liked the aroma. He told me it was an English blend he had made up at his local tobacconist and offered to share some with me. I grabbed one of my pipes and filled it up. It was a superb smoke to be sure. That’s just how pipe smokers are.

I suspect I’ll be hanging around that pipe forum for a long time. I’ve already learned some new things about particular pipe brands and models, as well as learning about some pipe tobaccos I have yet to try out.

I’ve had my eye on a Peterson 305 for a while now but have been unable to find one under $90. As that forum has a sales subforum I am hoping someone will put one up for sale for a price I can afford. It’s the one pipe that’s been on my wish list for a long time now.

There’s a Peterson Sherlock Holmes XL for sale on the site now, but at over $200 it’s too rich for my blood despite the fact that I would love to have it. It’s a truly beautiful pipe. Ah well, one of these days…

Hi Mason.  As you know I quit smoking almost 6 years ago but I know nothing about smoking a pipe although I had a few male family members who smoked a pipe and  I have enjoyed the nice smells.  I thought the different kinds of pipes was just because one liked the looks of a certain pipe but I am gathering from your post that there are differences in the way a pipe smokes depending on what kind.  I also wonder why some are so expensive.  Is it because of the wood it is carved from?  Just curious once again.

Yeah, I know ya quit, and am proud of ya for doing so. While cigarettes are something I am still struggling to be rid of I can't give up my pipes.

The difference in pipes has to do with the quality of the briar they are carved from or the other materials they are made from. My favorites are meercham. It's not a wood at all but a calcite mineral f0und in Turkey and carved into all sorts of artistic pipes.

Some pipes just smoke better than others, and meerscham is well know to smoke better than any other. I do smoke briar pipes too, but the meers are my favorites.
