I stayed the night here in Salt Lake City and some snow moved in over night. I had thought it was all over and was supposed to be warming up. That'll teach me to think I guess.
Right now the big pass heading east out of SLC is requiring tire chains, as is the first 40 miles or so in WY. Company policy is that we don't chain up, better to just wait, and I agree with that. If conditions are so bad as to require chains it's better to just park and wait.
This time of year can be so unpredictable, especially out in this part of the country. Nice and sunny one day, blizzard the next. I had considered leaving out of here yesterday afternoon but decided to just stay as it would have been hard to find parking in WY when I got there. I am now wondering if that was the wrong chouce as I could have beaten this crap and been moving already this morning.
Ah well, hindsight is always 20/20.
The current weather map doesn't look all that bad so I'm hoping the chain requirements will get lifted soon and I get get going. They're expecting a lot more snow around here, especially in western WY, over the next 24-48 hours and I want to get clear before it hits.
I am monitoring the state DOT websites to track the restrictions. It looks like once I get clear of The Sisters, it'll be smooth sailing. Hopefully they'll get the road cleared across that pass and I can head out before it get bad again.
As it is I'll have to run north on I-15 and catch I-84 back around to I-80 to av oid the steep grade pass going out of SLC. It's about 40 miles farther but avoids that steep grade, which is never good but is especially dangerous when the road is wet. Honestly, as slow as a loaded truck pulls up that grade the extra 40 miles will probably be faster anyway.
Well, time to head back out to the truck and be ready to roll the moment the chain restrictions are lifted.
