A bunch of useless crap
Published on August 11, 2008 By MasonM In Health & Medicine

I'm writing this as a way of making a commitment, sort of making it official so to speak. I am going to once again try to quit smoking.

I've tried and failed before. I'm going to try again.

It's pretty tough to quit while driving a truck. Smoking is so much a part of my driving that when driving I find it very difficult to not smoke. But I'm going to try. Again.

I've set my quit date for Wednesday. I have between now and then to mentally prepare myself for that first very rough few days.

I'll be giving up drinking beer, at least for a while, as it really makes me want to smoke. I may also have to give up coffee for the same reason. That last bit will be really tough. Hopefully I won't have to go that far.

Well, it's official, I'll be grouchy as hell come Wednesday afternoon.

Good luck Mason!  I'll say that now and stay out of your way come Wednesday, Thursday, Friday etc.......

Get some peppermint sticks or something to have handy while you're driving.  They say that can help and maybe try another beverage to replace the beer.  Ice Tea?

Thanks. Cinnamon candy usually helps and I'll be stocking up on some over the next day or so.

There is no substitute for beer

Gum is good too.

Oh and let me plug Tom Nicoli.  I didn't use them to quit smoking but his hypnosis CD's are great.  http://www.tomnicoli.com/smoking-pkg.shtml But you can't listen to them while you drive.

Another good idea is to make a list of things you can do instead of smoking, you're kind of limited when driving, but it helps you distract yourself when you just need something to get at.  I would think your knitting would be good but I always paint my nails.  You could try that.

Hmmm I think I'll stick to the knitting, somehow I don't think nail polish on a big bearded guy would go ever well in the truck stop

I will be praying for you, Mason.  I watched my mom try to kick the habit several times while I was growing up.  Every time she quit, she gained weight, so she would start back up again.  She finally started buying those little diet caramels and bubble gum.  She finally quit for good.

Please keep us apprised of your progress.

A man once asked me when I was struggling in those terrible times right after I first quit if I would ever consider letting a fifteen year old bosss me around and tell me what to do. When I said no he said "well that's exactly what you're doing EVERY SINGLE TIME you light up." After a bit I realized that was so true because I had began my little fling with tobacco when I was that age and in a very real sense that fifteen year old boy that was me was still in command. So...to sum it all up and make a long story short...YOU be the boss here! I know you can do it.

Thanks, I'm glad she finally beat it.

I suppose that's one way to look at it. Thanks.

Thanks, it's not an easy addiction to kick.
