A bunch of useless crap

Dr. Edgar Mitchell, a member of the Apollo 14 moon mission who, along with Alan Shepard, holds the record for the longest moon walk,  stated in a radio interview that extraterrestrials have visited Earth on several occasions and that these visits have been covered up by the world's governments.

He claims to have been briefed by NASA on these alien visitors and that the world-wide government cover up has been going on for more than six decades. A few quotes from the interview:

"I happen to have been privileged enough to be in on the fact that we've been visited on this planet and the UFO phenomena is real,"

"I've been in military and intelligence circles, who know that beneath the surface of what has been public knowledge, yes - we have been visited. Reading the papers recently, it's been happening quite a bit."

He claims that our technology is "not nearly as sophisticated" as theirs and "had they been hostile we would be been gone by now".

NASA has flatly denied these allegations.

I have a lot of respect for the man, but wonder if, at the age of 77, he isn't a bit off his rocker or just seeking out a bit of publicity for himself. While I acknowledge the high probability that intelligent life exists elsewhere in our universe, I think there's a very low probability that all of the major governments of the world could keep such a thing secret for so long.

One can find numerous reports regarding his radio interview on the web. If nothing else, it does make for some entertaining reading.

There are no space aliens. Their sightings are usually a result of very fertile imaginations! If they are there where did they come from? Millions of light years away? We've been watching too many movies guys.

With an estimated 500 billion planets in our galaxy and some 100 billion galaxies there should be many thousands of earth like planets out there that experienced an almost identical life cycle as ours.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and his just being in a position to know something we don’t is not very strong evidence of anything, so I think the governments secrets are still safe.

This statement is an absolute without any facts to back it up, therefore I consider it invalid. Had it been expressed as an opinion, I would respect it.

I tend to agree. Lacking any real solid evidence to back up his claims, I tend to view them with a very critical eye.

Have we cut funding on MIB again?

I for one agree with stubby, too many planets too many galaxies for one to believe we happen to be the only ones out here. I also tend to think that our technology tends to advance at a somewhat incredible rate and have to wonder sometimes how we come up with all these ideas out of thin air. But that's just me thinking too much probably.

Mathematically it's almost impossible for us to be the only ones. I still don't buy that they have visited us, although I can't rule out the possibility without proof one way or the other.

As for the technology, if you think about it we haven't really developed any truly new technological ideas in a very long time. Electricity and combustion, along with some chemistry, is about the extent of our technology and all of those things were discovered a very long time ago. All we've really done since then is refine and advance how we use those basic concepts. Nothing truly new.
