When I got back to the yard today I discovered that one of the dispatchers had screwed up yesterday and didn't let "R" know that I was coming in until very late in the afternoon. That didn't give him enough time to plan a load for me.
I talked with him for a bit and we discussed what loads we had on the yard. None of them paid what I am used to getting. We decided that it would be best for me to just get a room and wait until Monday to pick up a better payung load. What can I say? I don't work cheap.
When I went to my usual hotel I found that due to some local event bullshit they were booked up. Great. I called around and found that all of the hotels and motels in town were booked.
I expanded my search. My criteria was pretty basic. The place needed to be reasonably priced, have internet service, have food nearby, be within walking distance of an establishment that served adult beverages and had a potential for interesting conversation.
I eventually found a place just South of Milwaukee and headed there to check in.
After checking in, showering, and having a bit of lunch I walked the half mile to the nearest tavern. There were a couple of places right close to each other. One was named "Debbie's" and one was named "The Buckhorn Inn". The latter sounded much more interesting to me so that's where I headed.
It was a working class watering hole and was exactly the sort of place I like. I drank a few brews, watched some baseball, knit on my sweater, and chatted with the locals. Amazingly enough a lot of the conversation (at one point the entire bar) was about knitting and crochet.
One younger guy came in at one point and said 'Hey man, no offense, but this is the first time I've ever seen a big guy sitting in a bar and knitting". I just laughed at him and asked him how may little guys he'd seen knitting in the bar.
I had several people buy me beers and I joked and laughed with the locals for a while. All in all I have to say that I had a pretty good time. There was one guy that I thought I might have a problem with as he made a couple of negative remarks about my kniting. I was seriously considering putting out his lights but between a couple of the women and the bartender (who is an immigrant from Poland), I didn't need to get pjysical as they told him to shut the fuck up and one of them told him I was more of a manly man than his pussy ass would ever be.
I laughed my ass off, and even tried to joke with the guy to help him save some of his pride, but he just got pissed and walked out. I half expected to meet up with him again as I was walking back to the motel, but that didn't happen.
On the way back to the motel I stopped and picked up some Chinese food for dinner. Yum, yum. I may save the chopsticks to knit a hat or something.
