It's been an interesting few days. I picked up a couple of military trucks down near Houston on Tuesday. The place was seriously busy and I sat out in that hot sun for over eight hours waiting to load. It was well over 100 degrees.
Once I finally got loaded I started North towards Wisconsin to deliver the trucks at Ft. McCoy. I had planned on being there yesterday but ran smack into the serious storms hammering the Midwest. I wound up parking and sitting out one storm Wednesday night as the rain was coming down so strong I couldn't see the road and the wind was pushing my rig all over the place. Between that and the tornado warning right in my path, I decided to just sit it out.
I came through Iowa yesterday and saw some serious flooding. Entire towns are under water. I passsed one spot that, according to the sign sticking up out of the water, was a little league ball field. Except for the sign the only indication that anything was there was a few inches of fence top above the water. I had to reroute a couple of times to get around flooded roads.
I unloaded at Ft McCoy this morning and am now waiting for a load to be ready for pick up. I'm told it'll be ready around 1:00PM. The interstates are closed due to flooding between here and the yard so I am going to have to take a long route across to get there once I am loaded. With any luck I'll manage to make it across the state without running into any washed out or flooded roads. I checked the WI DOT website and found a route that isn't currently flooded. It's the long way but should get me through.
I feel sorry for all of the people being flooded out right now. It's pretty amazing to see this stuff in person. I've seen floods before, but nothing on quite this scale. It's a pretty huge area that's flooded and it doesn't look like it's going to improve any time soon.
Such is the power of Mother Nature. Surmakes my job interesting at times.
