A bunch of useless crap

After getting my truck out of the shop this afternoon I cruised over to Hobby Lobby to pick up some yarn. After spending some time picking out various yarns for some projects I've had in mind I headed for the check out line.

While waiting for my turn to check out a little old lady standing in line behind me commented on the basket full of yarn I was holding.

"Do you knit?" she asked.

"Yes Ma'am, I do" I replied.

"How do you know what yarn to pick out?" she asked after a moment of silence,

"I choose it" I replied "by weight and color depending on the projects I have in mind."

"Oh," she said "you really knit? I thought you were just pulling my leg and were buying the yarn for your wife."

"No ma'am" I said "it's for me."

I spent the next couple of minutes telling her that I am a truck driver, no I don't live around here, and that yes I did knit the hat I was wearing. The little dear even made me bend over so she could more closely check out the hat I was wearing, including a couple of pats on the head that I assume meant that the hat met with her approval.

She was a sweet little old woman.

At one point I mentioned that knitting gave me something to keep me busy. The woman in line in front of me said that it's better than sitting in a bar. I said that I was known for doing both at the same time and that I had found knitting in a bar to be a great way to meet women. The old woman behind me found that quite funny while the woman in front of me didn't seem to think very much of it.

After paying for the 20 lbs or so of yarn I had purchased I went on out to my truck. As I was pulling out of my parking space and heading for the exit the old woman walked out of the exit and was waving a furious goodbye to me.

I'm in the hotel now after spending a few hours hanging out at Applebee's, knitting, shooting the shit, drinking several beers, and generally killing time, but I can't help but think that the conversation in the checkout line with the little old lady was the highlight of my day.

You should have gotten her name and address so you could make her a hat

Great story, Mason!   I know knitting is becoming a regular way for truckers to pass time, but I just can't seem to put the two together.  I mean, the vision of a bunch of truckers relaxing in a truckers' lounge somewhere off I-Whatever, needles in hand, talking about the cool pattern they found the other day... ;~D

Thanks for the stories!!

Now this is a great story,   and it reminds me of that song by Tom T. Hall, bout "Old Dogs,  and Watermellon Wine."

Many do it but most aren't man enough to do it in public.

This is the best thing I have read in quite a while and put a much needed smile on my face. The idiots in Naples are getting to me once again. Being reminded there are sweet little old ladies out there and truckers who knit in bars just makes the world a good place. Thank you for the smile, Mason.

Glad to be of service
