A bunch of useless crap

I got up this morning expecting to roll into the Seattle area just about the time the morning rush hour oversized load curfew ended. As I approached the bottom of Snoqualmie Pass the big electronic signs advised that traction tires were advised and oversized vehicles are prohibited. Damn!

A quick check of 511 confirmed that it's snowing up there (it's snowing/raining down here too) and that they are prohibiting oversized vehicles until the conditions improve. No idea when that might be.

I had stopped in Ellensburg to eat late yesterday afternoon and was told by an Eastbound driver that it was snowing up there then, which is why I opted to wait until this morning, thinking that would give them all night to clean the roadway to make for safe travel. I guess the pass is really getting dumped on right now so it could be a while before it's opened up to oversized loads again.

Looking at the camera images from up there on the WA state DOT website, it does look pretty slushy up there at the moment. Definitely not conditions under which I want to pull a load in excess of 100,000 lbs. As much as I would like to get this load delivered and be reloaded again, it isn't worth risking the extreme fines for violating the restriction, and certainly isn't worth getting killed or killing someone else.

I guess I'll head back to the truckstop in Ellensburg and wait it out. Some breakfast sounds pretty good about now anyway.

Better safe than sorry for sure, or at least I'm guessing that what the safety people in that area are thinking and living by for now.

Hopefully it'll be a short wait for you, but in the meantime hopefully you'll have time to get a few good meals in, and maybe catch up on some web browsin' and other activities.

Thanks. Yeah it's better to not take the chance, especially on that grade as it's quite long and fairly steep at high altitude.

The state's 511 road conditions system went down this morning (figures) and hasn't come back up yet. I'm assuming that's due to it being a state holiday. That really sucks because it's our source of updated information. Checking the weather data online shows high wind warnings as well as snow so it isn't looking good for getting through there at all today. I guess I'll be checking into a hotel.

Hope your breakfast was good and that you're resting easy with your feet up.

Hey,  whatever happened to "Saddletramp"?   Would be nice to see more video if you're up to it.

I remember you said it was a lot of work so that's ok too if no go.

Have a good week.

Thanks. Yeah I checked into a motel and am taking it easy for tonight. The pass should be clear tomorrow morning.

The video work simply takes too much time. I have shot some footage but haven't had the time to do the edit and upload work. Perhaps while I am home next I'll have time to do it.

VDOT has traffic cameras, but as far as I know, none on the passes.  But then the worst pass in the state is usually fogged in, and cameras would not show much (other than the fog).  But then Va does not have passes that high either.  The 2 I can think of are about 4000 and 5000 feet respectively.  And while they get snow, nothing like what Washington is getting.

Hope the wait is short.  Good luck on the final leg.

Thanks. I checked the WSDOT site as soon as I got up this morning. The storm has passed but there is still light snow and slush up there, as well as a truck wreck they are cleaning up, and it's still closed to oversized loads.

As the storm has passed they should have it opened up shortly after the sun rises. That's my hope anyway. I called dispatch and gave them the fax number to this motel so they can fax over our revised permits as soon as they get them.
