A bunch of useless crap

The sun makes life possible, and also makes it impossible. Today was an impossible day. The load I am hauling to WI is a bunch of fabricated steel, a bunch of parts to build a conveyor system, and took me about four hours to load and secure. The sun was beating down the whole time.

After about two hours I was starting to feel the effects of the brutal sunshine. I was getting a little light headed and was feeling weak. I grabbed a bottle of Gatorade out of the fridge and drank down a good bit of it. It helped a lot. By the time I was on the last strap for the load I was feeling very ill and needed to get out of the sun. At that point I was sunburned and feeling a bit sick.

I left the shipper and started heading north, chugging down Gatorade all the way. I decided to not try and push it and run too far up the road, and set my sights on a small truckstop about two hours up the road. It just happens to have a bar at the edge of the parking lot. A few cold beers and some food can go a long way to relieving the sickness that can come from spending too much time working out in the sun. The sunburn will heal over the course of a few days, and the sun sickness has already started to subside.

It's amazing how much effect the sun can have on you while working. I'll survive and tomorrow morning will be good as new, but for now I am still recovering from the damn sun that tried to kill me today.

It's funny you wrote this article as I was writing mine. I also wrote of my day, similar to how you wrote about yours. Only I wrote about the sun staying in under intense fog but finally breaking free. As it did so, the temps went up.

So I was out and about all day as well, but was protected with fog cover for much of it. But when the sun came out, it was quite warm.

Don't you normally wear a hat Mason? A nice big floppy one would be good for a day like you had today. Sounds like you got a bit of sunstroke today.

Gatorade is very good, as you said, replacing all the electrolytes lost during sweating, but even drinking LOTS of water can be very helpful during these times. Staying hydrated makes the world of difference but sometimes we get so busy we are too busy to drink what we need to.

Hope you feel better tomorrow.

I am a bit old fashioned in that I never go outdoors without a hat. Hats are as much a survival device as fashion. At last count I have more than 50 of them. A tad insane, but true.

Not sunstroke, but a bit of heat exhaustion perhaps.

Thanks.

It had been fairly mild in my area over the last few days, but got warmer as the week had progressed so this afternoon it was back into the upper 80s.  Sitting at the ball game (Nationals vs. Phillies) this evening was back to uncomfortable and sweaty and this was evening hours.  That was bad enough for me, no way I'd want to be out doing the work you are doing in anything warmer than that.  Especially not over that sort of time frame/duration.

I hope you got plenty of drink and some good cool down time!

Hope today finds you feeling a bit more comfortable

Just think,  in a few more weeks the air will be crisp and cool,  a lot easier to take.

Take care

Thanks. It normally doesn't really bother me to work out in the heat but for some reason the sun was especially brutal.

Thanks. I feel better than I did yesterday but still feel sick. Sun sickness I suppose. I drove as far as I could today and just had to stop as I simply do not feel well. I've checked into a motel for the remainder of the day and tonight. I'm sure I'll be feeling better tomorrow, but for now I'm going to rest and treat the sunburn.

Your radar is still working!

I love working in the sun, but as long as I have plenty of fluids.  Plus the fact I dont usually do it makes it an adventure too.  But then I am not strapping down a load in texas either, and as Terp says, the temperature here has been just perfect!

Well as we're told all the time.. Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate.... is the best way above all to prevent feeling sick like that again. After the first time I got heat exhaustion I followed that hydrate rule and havn't gotten it since, and have worked through some crazy hot sunny days... ANd even taking a break in the shade or AC every once in a while is sound advice also.

Keep on working hard Though Mason. You got that Old School work ethic like was instilled into me and 'some' of those still being raised today
