The good paying oversized load to Miami fell through. It happens. They booked me on a legal load to TX instead. It was supposed to load after 2:00 this afternoon. I called the guy around 1:00 to let him know I was about to leave and head his way. He informed me that the roller loads tomorrow afternoon, not this afternoon. WTF?
I called dispatch and let them know there was some confusion about the load and left it to them to handle it. Not my job, man.
I finally got a call back saying to just be there tomorrow morning to load it. Ok, no problem. I grabbed my bag and went inside for a shower. I had planned to shower after loading but since it wouldn't be until tomorrow I didn't care to wait. After showering I stopped by the truckstop barber shop and got myself a trim. May as well take advantage of the down time ya know.
After that, and getting a bite to eat, I finally wandered back to my truck to find that there was a voice mail indicator on my cell phone. I checked it and it was a message from the broker for this load telling me that she was sorry for the confusion, that she had mistakenly noted the wrong date, and that I should pick it up after lunch time tomorrow. She also said that since she had made the error that she would be paying detention time for the wait.
It isn't often that a broker offers to pay detention pay. You usually have to scream and yell before they'll cough it up. But then, they also rarely admit they made a mistake either.
I'm used to this sort of thing, it goes with the business. Things rarely go exactly as planned and it often amounts to a hurry up and wait situation. I'm just making the best of it. What else can you do?
