A bunch of useless crap
Published on September 2, 2007 By MasonM In Blogging
I'm parked for the night in North Little Rock, AR after spending last night in a motel in a little burg known as Seven Oaks, TX. The motel was cheap, the lounge wasn't overly busy, and it was a relaxing evening.

The drive up to here today wasn't too bad but could have been better if there weren't so many complete morons on the roads. Happens every holiday weekend. One in particular had me about ready to run her dumb ass off in the ditch if for no other reason than the safety of the motoring public.

This silly bitch passed me and I noticed that she was too busy goofing around with the guy in the passenger seat to really be paying attention to her driving. When she changed from the passing lane back into the right lane she immediately began slowing down and was now in my way. I changed lanes and went around her.

The moment I moved back into the right lane this goofy broad moved left and passed me again. Within about a mile she had again slowed down and was once again in my damn way. I passed her dumb ass once again.

As before she immediately moved out and passed me for a third time. I'd had about enough of her stupidity at this point. She was simply too busy doing anything and everything but pay attention to her driving. When she passed me that time, as before, she started slowing down again. This time I stayed in the lane and blasted the air horns directly behind her.

I guess this scared her enough that she pulled her empty head out of her ass and hit the gas. That was, thankfully, the last I saw of that stupid bitch. The way she was weaving back and forth on the road, running off onto the shoulder several times, anyone would have thought she was drunk. I would have thought the same had I not seen that she was simply not paying the slightest bit of attention to her driving.

I wonder if they made it to their destination or wound up killing someone. I really despise stupid drivers.

But I did finally make it to here. I'm now waiting for someone to fill the parking spot on my left. The truckstop is filling up but the spot on my left is a bit of a tight backing situation thanks to some dumbass parked directly across from it in a spot clearly marked "No Parking". I swear I think some drivers believe that means the spot was reserved just for them. Idiots.

A couple of trucks have tried backing into the spot but weren't able to do so and moved on. I'm hoping someone will manage to fill it before it gets dark and the chances of someone hitting my truck in the process goes up greatly.

I'm hauling fiberglass conduit and one stack shifted a bit today so tomorrow morning I'll have to climb up and try to get it restacked properly so it will stay put during the ride. Luckily the stacks only weigh a few hundred pounds each so it shouldn't be too hard to shift them around and get them back into place. Thankfully it's not steel or something.

I almost bought an electronic keyboard earlier. I saw that the truckstop has a reasonably nice Casio keyboard on sale for a hundred bucks. I was really tempted as I always enjoyed playing the keyboard and am seriously out of practice, but I decided that the last thing I need is something else taking up precious room in my truck. Maybe I'll take up harmonica.

Glad you arrived safely at your destination.

Your tale of the driver you were dealing with makes me think that they must have used some sort of transporter device crossed with a sex-change device as I had similar fun just a bit ago with someone that just had to squeeze their vehicle in between myself and the only other car on the roadway, the one that was right in front of me.  Seriously, 3 vehicles on the road, and the knucklehead runs up to my left, sees me just about tailgating the one in front of me, and opts to squeeze into that space rather than assuming the tail of the pack.

I let 'em in knowing that they were most likely forcing their way in so they could exit to the right at the next overpass which is just where I needed to be too and sure enough they were left trying to squeeze over once again.  If I was a jerk they'd have been behind me or off the road completely, but I was feeling a little generous this evening

Yeah it's really amazing how stupid people are when behind the wheel. They simply have no clue how close they come to death every day.

Maybe she was just trying to get your attention?

Well, at least that would have been sexier than some dumb idiot as was probably the case.

I like staying ahead of the crowd to stay away from possible multi-car accidents. I usually have to speed in order to do that then stay about 5 to 10 miles above the speed limit. I usually move out of the way of cars that seem to be in such a rush and would rather tailgate you and hope you speed up as oppose to move around you.

I have a question or 2 Mason. I have seen some shows about some interesting gadgets at truck stops such as these arms that attach to your window that give you things such as TV, phone, and Internet. Have you seen and used these gadgets before? If so, how were they?

Yeah, I saw that stuff on Modern Marvels, I think. It's cool beans! Wish they'd had that when I was out there driving...the latest ones even provide heating and a/c so you can shut your truck off.

Now thats sweet. Makes me think it's not fair for car drivers.
lol.

No, she was just not paying any attention to that which she should have been.

Sounds like how my dad drives, all the time. He seems incapable of maintaining any particular speed, and I've witnessed truckers and other motorists getting increasingly hostile towards him after he's passed them and slowed down for the umpteenth time. He refuses to use cruise control, and his driving will make you seasick because he's constantly accelerating or braking.

I loathe riding with him, I really do. He's the kind of driver that doesn't get into accidents himself, but causes OTHERS to get into wrecks, while he drives happily on, oblivious of the rage and chaos he leaves in his wake.

There are a lot of them out on the roads and it's far too difficult to take someone's license away in this country. It should be hard to get one and easy to lose it and then perhaps people would drive better.

That's called Idle Aire and as far as I am concerned it's over-priced garbage that only serves to take up room in the parking lot, thus reducing the already short supply of truck parking. The country as a whole needs at least one million more truck parking spaces for the current number of trucks on the roads, not counting projected growth.

The heating/cooling system is kind of stupid because it's mounted in your window. In order to actually benefit from it while sleeping you have to keep your sleeper curtain open, the whole point of having which is for privacy and to shut out the light so you can sleep.

The service is expensive and frankly, not worth it. They also block off their parking spaces so that you can only use them if you pay for their crappy service, leaving maybe 10% of the parking lot left for those who don't want or need it. You wind up with a lot of trucks with no place to park for the night.

My rig is equipped with an APU which is a combination of power generator and heating/cooling unit and the cost of running it at night is a fraction of what their service costs and I am free to close my curtains so I can actually sleep.

I don't have a television in the truck and don't want one, so the tv service means nothing to me, and I use wireless internet so don't need their service for that either.

So in other words a waste of money. Nice to get the point of voew of those who would actually use it and are not getting paid to say good things about it. Besides if you have a PC, all you need is a few movies to keep you company.

I guess everyone has their own idea of it being good or bad. Sorry for hijacking you thread in this manner Mason. I figured I got a truck driver on here I could ask about this. If you're ever around West Palm Beach on the I-95 blow the horn to the building that says Cemex on it and if I hear you I'll try to wave back.

The ones I saw had the units on a catwalk positioned OVER the parking spaces, so it didn't take up any more room than just a regular spot, and remember, the technology is brand new, so there's plenty of room for improvement.

Yes, that's how they are built. The supports for the thing cost a few parking spaces. But they take away parking spaces in that if you are going to park and not use their service you can't park there, especially if you plan to idle your truck or use a generator such as I use as those spaces are "no idle zones". Most of us only need a place to park and aren't interested in using their service so for most of us it's just wasted parking spaces that we can't use.

I would have appreciated such a service *very* much when we were driving our first truck, a crappy old Mac cabover with a single berth and no a/c. In addition, we were hauling refrigerated loads, so the engine had to be left running as there was no independent generator, so that meant one of us had to sleep on the 'doghouse' which, needless to say, was hot as FUCK.

Oh misery of miseries, I despised that truck, we were running strawberries from florida to NYC, and the suspension was so bad we had to strap ourselves in with BUNGEE cords so as not to knock ourselves unconscious as we negotiated the teeth-cracking potholes coming into the city, me gripping our dog on my lap as tightly as I could to keep her from flying about too.

Sounds a lot like one of my old trucks, an old International C/O with spring ride. Damn thing would beat you to death. No a/c of course.

But I digress...later, we bought our own truck, a White/GMC/Volvo Conventional with a 325 Cat and a 13 speed Fuller tranny, integrated sleeper for two, complete with fridge, independent heat and ac controls, storage units, etc. It seemed a cadillac after that nasty old Mac cabover, and it had something that your truck doesnt, Mason, curtains all around, not just between the cab and berth.

Yeah some models do come with those around the cab curtains. Mine doesn't have that although I could install it if I chose. I do happen to have an aftermarket one but don't like it and so haven't installed it in this truck.

Still, I imagine those who are driving older trucks, or stripped down models bereft of creature comforts (check out any Yellow truck, these drivers are hard-core) in order to be able to accept heavier loads, would appreciate the amenities offered at these high-tech truckstops, I know I would have when we were driving that hateful Mac.

Honestly, the only ones I've seen using the service are those who drive for companies who are paying for the service to keep their drivers from idling their trucks. They get a group discount which makes it more affordable. Those running their own rigs or a company rig where they have to pay for the service themselves aren't going to use it as it's just too expensive. But I do get your point, if you don't have other options it would be better than nothing.

No big deal, a thread goes where it goes. I actually know the building on which you write.

Really? It use to say Rinker on it but they are changing the name to Cemex. It's off the I-95 and Belvedere Rd.

Yep, I know right where it is. That's one of the advantages of being in this business, we usually keep up on such changes as we're often involved with the logistics of such things as delivering signs, materials, etc. Cemex acquired (read took over) Rinker back in June, becoming the world's largest supplier of building materials.

Exactamundo. That acquired/take over part is still a mystery even to us.
