A bunch of useless crap

When I arrived at the delivery location this morning I spent a couple of minutes talking to the guy before I started working on untarping and unsecuring the load. I made sure he knew that the thing had been sitting outside in the weather, was rusted, and that it had been loaded in the rain. I didn't want him bitching at me for it's condition, especially after going through the trouble of tarping it.

He informed me that he knew that it had been sitting outside for a month and that they were just going to be scrapping it for whatever parts they could.

What??!!!!! As my hip was still sore and hurting from tarping the damn thing I was less than happy to hear this. I asked him why the hell they had wanted it tarped in the first place. "Company policy" was his irritating reply. He did say it didn't make any sense to him either. Grrrrr.

I got the thing untarped, the heavy tarp folded, rolled, and stowed away, and then stood back and watched them unload the pile of rust while trying to ignore the incredible pain in my hip. Those tarps are quite heavy and don't do my bum hip any favors. The last thing I want is to have to handle one for no good reason.

Once the unload was finished I drove the 6 miles to the truckstop before calling dispatch. As I'd expected they didn't yet have a reload for me so I had time to limp inside to wash the grime off my arms and have some breakfast.

By the time I'd finished eating I found that my hip had done exactly what I expected it to do and had stiffened up to the point I could hardly walk properly. Naturally I'd left my damn cane in the truck (stubborn or stupid, take your pick). I limped back out as best I could, the walking helping to loosen things up a little bit. It'll hurt for a few days but eventually go back to it's abnormal self again. I topped off breakfast with several Ibuprofen tablets, not that they really help all that much.

It's one thing to go through this because a piece needs protection from the elements, but quite another when the thing is already rusty and ruined by those same elements, all in the name of company policy. Idiots.

Ok, I'm done bitching now.

That sucks, Mason. Too bad you can't just make them tarp it if they want it tarped. Bah.

Hmm... I'll take stubborn, who wants the stupid?

I have some advice (after dealing with RA for the past 22 years)- when you know that you have overdone it, before you rest, take the maximum amount of anti-inflammatory that you can take.  Then, while you are resting, stand up and a move a bit every 10 minutes or so for the first 45 minutes.  It will keep the swelling and stiffness down to a manageable level.

The policy you mention does sound pretty stupid, especially for something that is basically scrap anyway.

Sorry to hear it was such a pain, in more ways than one

I wish. They pay for the tarping so it gets tarped. I did make the guy help me tarp it though.

Nobody wants stupid, but I think there's a little of it in all of us.

Thanks. That makes sense but in my line of work it's not always possible. I walk around as much as possible but spent the bulk of my time sitting behind the wheel which is probably about the worst possible thing for the hip when it gets like this.

It'll pass. It always does.

Thanks. That's one thing about this line of work, ya get to see all different flavors of stupid out here.

The only difference between big government and big business is the name of the stockholders.  Both blindly follow policy without thinking why or using common sense.  It makes it easier for middle management - who usually dont have the brains to think - and for upper management as they have too many middle managers to manage.

I'd take it sooner than that, like before you even start tarping, because you KNOW this activity is going to result in stiffness/soreness.

The most important thing I've learned about pain management is that it's easier to manage than relieve. In other words, if you wait until you're really hurting to take medication, the meds aren't going to be as effective as they would be if you had taken them to head off the pain in the first place.

Very true and I have learned that myself. Better to head it off at the pass. Too bad I'm too damn stupid to actually do it.

Yep. Easier to follow policy than think about it.
