A bunch of useless crap

I've read all of the stuff regarding the signs of skin cancer. I think probably everyone who lives in Florida has.

I have this brown spot on my face that I think may be skin cancer. It's roughly the size of a dime. It's slightly raised, irregular in shape, and kind of just sort of appeared one day and grew to what it is now.

As I spend a great deal of time out in the sun it's possible. Cancers do run in my family.

I guess I should probably go see a doctor about it at some point. It's been there for a number of months now. My younger brother had a similar place on the side of his nose that he ignored for a long time. He no longer has a nose as the doctors had to remove it. I would kinda hate to lose my whole right cheek (not that it would adversely affect my looks).

I think I'll line up an appointment to see a doc the next time I get home. It might be worth it just to know for sure and maybe get it removed.

I'm not a worrier. It's been there for a few months now, I don't think another month or so will make much difference one way or the other.

Ditto on that!

One thing I've learned to do since living here is to wear sunblock, everyday, even though I'm just walking around or driving. It's hot as heck here as you know. And I get several shades darker during the summer and almost back to normal during the fall months. Although my skin is darker than yours, and I'm not prone to that, I'm older and I see the changes in my skin so taking care of it is high on my list.

Definitely get it checked and maybe start wearing a sunscreen or sunblock and wear your hat! Every little bit helps!

A friend of mine's mother had a melanoma on her face a few years back and ignored it for the longest. It eneded up going into her eye and then her brain and killing her at the age of fifty-seven. Skin cancer is nothing to fuck around with, Mason.

Really do hope you go to the doc asap.

Sorry about your brother Mason.

Yeah that's something many people don't realize, that black people tan too. It's good thinking for you to wear sunblock even though you're far less likely to develop a problem as you have built in sunscreen to a certain extent.

I always wear a hat when outdoors, but I am pretty lax about sunscreen.

That month you wait may be the month it decides to metastisize, Mason. If it's a basal or squamous cell type, it may not make much difference, but if it's a melanoma it's gonna need to come off asap.

Fuck an appointment, stop by the nearest Urgent Care center and have them take a look at it.

Yeah, I'll try and have it checked when I can. Somehow I doubt that an urgent care place would be able to do much but maybe I'll stop into one. A number of truck stops have basic clinics, if I come across one I might pop in to just have them take a look.

There is the possibility that the brown spot is nothing more than a blemish of some sort, but who knows?

Hopefully, but then knowing is better.  And skin cancer is the most treatable when caught in time.

Or maybe it is just an age spot?

Could be an "age spot". I've always had a lot of moles. That puts me in the higher risk category for skin cancers of course, but it also means that I am prone to these sorts of blemishes. It does look a lot like a large flat mole.

Remember your ABCD's, Mason.

Is it Asymmetrical?
Does it have an irregular Border?
Is the Color even throughout?
Is the Diameter larger than a pencil eraser? (or growing/spreading)

Thanks. I looked at that myself. It's one of the things that makes me think it may just be a blemish or odd mole. The shape is sort of oval but the edges are smooth not jagged or anything like those and the color is even. It is rather large, about the size of a dime as I mentioned before, but otherwise it really doesn't resemble any of the examples I've seen of a cancerous growth.

But the fact that it just sort of appeared one day and grew over the course of a few months does give me pause to wonder about it. I also have another one on the top of my head that is larger and more irregular. That one does sort of look more like some of those than the one on my face. I probably should get them checked at some point just for the peace of mind.

Probably good advice. Thanks.
