While running through TN today I got a call from the boss. He said he just wanted to check up on me to see if I was ok now that yesterday's bullshit was over and done with.
I told him that I felt really bad about what happened, but that I now had to focus on getting the job done. He said that he wanted to make sure that I knew he wasn't upset with me over the incident, that he was just upset over the incident itself and I shouldn't take it personally.
I assured him that we had known each other long enough for me to understand that. He relayed that he thought that was the case but that he also knew that I took the job seriously and he didn't want me thinking he thought any less of me over this. It wasn't my fault.
That was nice to hear. Pete and I have known each other for several years now, and he was my dispatcher back when I first started working here. He became "the boss" when his father, who originally hired me, decided to retire. We've always got along well and I'd hate for that to change over something like this.
I mentioned to him that I felt that we should be using heavier, 20,000 lbs rated chains on these fire trucks instead of the normal 10,000 lbs rated ones we currently use. It would cut down on a lot of this sort of thing happening. He said he thought it was a good idea and that he would have the shop buy some heavy chain and start making up sets for all of us who haul the fire trucks. He doesn't let everyone haul these, just the ones he trusts.
So when I get back to the yard I should get a shiny new set of heavy chains specifically for the fire trucks. Maybe some small amount of good will come of this incident after all.
