A bunch of useless crap

While running through TN today I got a call from the boss. He said he just wanted to check up on me to see if I was ok now that yesterday's bullshit was over and done with.

I told him that I felt really bad about what happened, but that I now had to focus on getting the job done. He said that he wanted to make sure that I knew he wasn't upset with me over the incident, that he was just upset over the incident itself and I shouldn't take it personally.

I assured him that we had known each other long enough for me to understand that. He relayed that he thought that was the case but that he also knew that I took the job seriously and he didn't want me thinking he thought any less of me over this. It wasn't my fault.

That was nice to hear. Pete and I have known each other for several years now, and he was my dispatcher back when I first started working here. He became "the boss" when his father, who originally hired me, decided to retire. We've always got along well and I'd hate for that to change over something like this.

I mentioned to him that I felt that we should be using heavier, 20,000 lbs rated chains on these fire trucks instead of the normal 10,000 lbs rated ones we currently use. It would cut down on a lot of this sort of thing happening. He said he thought it was a good idea and that he would have the shop buy some heavy chain and start making up sets for all of us who haul the fire trucks. He doesn't let everyone haul these, just the ones he trusts.

So when I get back to the yard I should get a shiny new set of heavy chains specifically for the fire trucks. Maybe some small amount of good will come of this incident after all.

From your description of the original events even the heavier chains might not really have stopped things since a brain dead driver caused your sudden actions.  If that brain dead driver wasn't as lucky as he/she seems to have been, you could have done much more damage than what you originally had.

Good that you're suggesting things that might help prevent problems, but the better answer is for the idiot drivers to use some more caution and keep from forcing you to make sudden moves to save their apparently worthless lives.

Yeah, that's one of the things the boss said. He was just happy that nobody got hurt.

The only way that will ever happen will to be ban cars and force people onto mass transit. It other words, it's never gonna happen.

Now flying cars are actually coming to the market. I heard about them on the radio. This company currently has 2 models. One will fly 10 feet off the ground, and the other up to 300 feet. Right now they are still very expensive but they said the price should become affordable to the average person within 5 to 10 years. That's when I'll quit driving. These morons can't operate on the ground, I don't want to be out there when they start crashing in mid-air and falling on others.

That's a really positive way of looking at it Mason,  very constructive.  Nice too that you and your bossman have an understanding.  I wonder how common that is?

Hey,  it's almost the weekend

Thanks. No point in dwelling on things. It happened, time to move on.

I have to admit I have a good boss in that he's also a friend.

Good!

It is a testament to your relationship that he could blow up (and before the call - you had blogged that you understood why he did - so the relationship is 2 way) and both of you understand what it really was all about.  We all need to rant on occassion, and only those that know us well, and we feel comfortable around, can do it without causing ill feelings.

Such is your relationship.  The last boss I had like that, I attended his funeral 3 years ago.  He was one of the best ones!  I still miss him.
