I spent a fair amount of time knitting on my first sock today and really made some progress on it. I was a bit concerned about turning the heel. Even after reading the instructions several times I just couldn't understand how it was going to create a 90 degree turn in the sock to make the heel.
But I followed the instructions to the letter and like magic there was a 90 degree bend and an actual heel in the sock. Amazing. Having done it now I understand how it works, kind of, but it really is like magic. You're basically working with some sticks and some string and magically this lump of string turns into a recognizable object.
After picking up and shaping the gusset, I'm now on the long boring part. It's basically just knitting around and around until the foot of the sock is long enough to fit. In my case, as I have size 13 feet, that's a lot of going around in circles. Once I finally have the foot of the sock long enough I'll tackle the final part; the toe.
