A bunch of useless crap

Today I decided to try a sock on double point needles (dpns). I've finally gotten to the point that I feel pretty comfortable knitting with two straight needles, but trying to knit with four dpns is quite awkward and challenging.

After several frogged attempts I finally got a few round knitted. I am not 100% sure if I am doing it right, but once it gets a little more length it should be pretty obvious. It'll either look like the ribbed top of a sock, or a total mess.

As this is my first attempt at it I decided to make it a little easier on myself by using a worsted weight yarn and size 6 dpns. I have a few skeins of sport weight cotton yard, but I'll save that for when I get a bit more comfortable with the dpns. I understand that cotton can be somewhat more challenging to work with.

The sock pattern calls for making the sock tops 8 inches long but as I am about 30 yards short of the amount of yarn it says I need I'm going to make the tops shorter, about 5 inches, and hope that will permit me to finish the pair of socks with the yarn I have.

Nothing like a bit of a challenge to pass the time.

Or in my case, 2 puncture wounds at one time!

Thanks. I really do enjoy the challenge and find the knitting itself very relaxing. I've always enjoyed learning new stuff.

DPN's can be a bit daunting at first, but once you get going they're actually pretty easy to work with.  I make all my baby beanies and even my adult hats on DPN's; it's nice to not have a seam running down the back of them.

Good luck turning the heel, Mason!  If you need any help, let me know....and remember, friends don't let friends knit drunk!

So far so good (I think).

Kind of a crappy pic as I had to use my webcam.

You have a funny-lookin' thumb there, Mason! Has it been broken or is the camera angle just strange?

Nah is just my big clumsy hand trying to hold onto those little needles combined with an odd camera angle. Of course having all "double jointed" fingers probably adds to the odd look. (but the early stage of arthritis is quickly stiffening those joints)
