A bunch of useless crap

I aired up the tires on the bent to ride down to the corner c-store to stock up on brews for the day/evening. It's obligatory when I'm home ya know. As it's a bit chilly out I threw on one of my Baja jackets and took off.

The guy working the register is from some place in the Middle East (he's never actually said what country, he just says the Middle East and I don't press him on it as it's none of my business).. He's a pretty nice guy and has lived in this country long enough that his English is pretty good. He pointed to my Baja jacket and asked me where I got it. I told him I have several of them and have picked them up in various truck stops around the country.

He asked how much they sell for, and guessed "$50?" I told him he can get them at just about any truck stop for about 10 bucks each. He seemed a bit surprised at the cheap price. He said that back in the Middle East people wear the same sort of thing when it's chilly and he really liked them.

We chatted about it for a minute and I told him the next time I come in off the road I'd bring him a couple of them that should fit him. He was quite happy about that and said he looked forward to having one.

I've always liked them myself. They're loose fitting, not at all bulky, and while they keep you warm they also breath so as to not roast you when you go from the chill of outside to a heated building. I always carry two or three of them in my truck all year long.

In case you aren't familiar with a Baja jacket, this is what they look like, and they come in a wide variety of colors and patterns and they are always hooded:

They are nice, but as it is headed to 8 degrees here, I will stick with a heavier coat for the near term.

I have been known to wear them under a coat for an added layer of warmth.

I like it! I especially like that it comes with a hood!

That's really nice of you.

Ha, and it's cool to finally know what those things are actually called.

I'm with Mason. They are extremely handy things to have . . . I loved mine back in the day, but it's gone the way of the dodo. I should pick up a new one one of these here days . . .

They're very comfy. I rarely actually use the hood as I almost always wear a hat, but it adds to the look.

No biggie, almost all truck stops carry them so I won't actually being going out of my way or anything

I always called them either Mexican jackets or Hippie jackets until I started wearing them myself several years ago and learned the actual name for them.

Just find a truck stop. They are handy and comfortable to be sure.

My wife bought one for my son - but we picked them up in Baja!

Well that would be the logical place but I think for most folks a truck stop may be a bit handier.

I have a baja hoodie, and Dave's got a black and white one that we picked up at a market in Carnaby street, London.  That's a fair old way from Baja.....

I love my hoodie.  It's nice and warm and it's durable too.  I wear mine all year round - in the summer when the evenings get cool, the fall and spring as a light jacket, and in the winter under my coat.  I've had mine for over 5 years now and it hasn't shown any signs of falling apart - unlike my sweatshirt hoodies; they're worn out after a year or two.

Yay for Baja jackets, and yay for Mason for being so nice!

Yeah, they are pretty durable. I have a couple of them that are 10 years old and still look just fine.

Baja jackets... We called 'em hippy hoodies. I would love a few of them myself. They are a hard item to find in Australia. I had one once and it lasted for a long, long time before it finally fell to pieces. I will have to check out the markets here again.

You're a good man, Mason, despite what 'they' say
