A bunch of useless crap

I woke this morning to find the world shrouded in a thick fog. While I'd hoped it was just a local fog I have been in the Northwest enough times to know that wasn't likely. It never ceases to amaze me how many dumbasses are out there who lack the common sense to turn on their damn lights in the fog. Amazing stupidity.

I made my way through the fog to Boring, OR and to my pick up location to find that another truck, one of our competitors, had beaten me here by about two minutes. Luckily, he is only picking up one truck so won't take as long as my two. Of course that also means that I am getting paid more then he is, which is a small consolation as I wait for him to get loaded first.

Normally when one picks up a truck you back to a dock and the truck is driven onto the trailer. This place is a bit odd in that they don't have a dock and set the trucks on with a crane. Seems like a major waste of a crane to me, but it's their business and I really don't care except that their way takes longer.

The lady had told me yesterday that they would be ready to start loading at 9:00 am local time. I pulled in at 8:30 am hoping to be the first one here. Ah well, second is almost as good as first I guess. Maybe by the time they are ready to load me they'll be more awake and efficient. Or not.

The lady here was nice enough to copy a local road map for me and highlight a short cut up to the interstate from here. I asked her for a second copy and carried it out to the driver who had beaten me here. He was grateful for it, as was I. It's a much shorter route than going all the way back the way we had come in, and will get us both up to the truck stop in about half the time.

I'm low on fuel and want to be sure I can make it up there to fuel up. I intentionally didn't fuel at the little place I stopped for the night last night because I knew that I would want to get a shower after loading this morning. No point in taking a shower and then getting all dirty the next morning. Best to get the dirty work done first and then get a shower. I hate wasting a free shower.

I think Monday shifted a few spots to the right on the calendar. The first truck was loaded, and it was my turn. I pulled up to get lined up on the crane. The crane ran out of fuel and now I am waiting for them to get more fuel, re-prime the system, and get it running again.

Ah well, another day another dollar two ninety eight.

oooo I can't do anything or say anything without having a shower first - I don't move until I have had one - even if I have to come back and have another one so quickly - funny quirk of mine - I suppose we all have them - quirks that is

Thanks Jen. It's a bit different out here on the road. One can take advantage of the free shower provided when buying fuel, or spend 8 or 9 bucks on one. While I will pay for a shower when I have to, I try to economize and take advantage of the free ones.

I had a choice of using a free shower last night just to get all dirty again this morning, or waiting until the dirty work was done and then getting a free shower. No brainer really.

There is also the time factor. In trucking, one really can't afford the time to shower twice a day. I showered yesterday morning so wasting a free one last night just to go all day today without one after getting all dirty just seemed dumb.

But I do agree with your sentiment. When home, I don't leave the house before showering first.

Boring, OR? For real? I had to google for it. Man I would hate to grow up there.

Well, at least it is the cranes problem, and just a delay on your part. Not as bad as you running out of fuel. Have a safe trip. Hopefully the fog will lift by the time you leave the pick up point.

Yep, there really is an OR town named Boring

Heh, twice a week is lucky during busy times!

Yeah, I make an effort to shower a minimum of every other day. Every day when possible. But the ugly reality of the trucking business is that sometimes you really do only get a shower a couple of times a week.

it's always 'hurry up and wait' aint it?

I'm pretty lucky there most of the time. The type of specialized/military stuff I normally do doesn't usually keep me waiting around too much. But stuff happens.

did i ever tell you about Motts Applesauce facility and the load of apples from hell?

I can well imagine and look forward to reading it. There's a reason I've always refused to haul any sort of produce.

You seem well suited for the work, though...so keep on truckin!

Thanks, it does suit me for the most part.

ps, the first place i saw the phrase 'onward through the fog' was on a power-hitter for weed, complete with a picture of Mr Natural. Damn, i'm old.

I guess I'm old too because I used to have that same plastic bottle myself It was a blue one as I recall.

Thanks. I try to not ever run my rig out of fuel but it has happened once or twice. The last time was as I was pulling into the fuel island and it ran out 25 feet from the pumps. It cost me $250 to have the rig towed that 25 feet!

This is starting to look like one of those all day fogs.

I got the military trucks loaded. I see now why they had to use a crane. They have no rear axles. That's a new one on me, but ya see all sorts of strange stuff out here.

I made it to the truck stop and have now had my breakfast. As I was eating I debated as to whether to stay here or go on down the road. By the time I fuel up and shower it'll be getting on into late afternoon. As I don't deliver at Ft McCoy, WI until Monday I may as well just stay here.

Besides, this truck stop has a rather nice bar inside. I ate my breakfast in the bar as it's the only place in the truck stop one can smoke and I enjoy a smoke with my coffee.

I'm only 30 hours from my destination and even staying here tonight I'll have 3 full days to get it there. 10 hours of driving a day is doable enough and the weather forecast looks pretty good. I'll have a few beers tonight, get some sleep, and do some real trucking starting in the morning.

Yeah, imagine that.
