A bunch of useless crap

Atlanta was a nightmare to get through today. There was a line of severe weather pass through; very heavy rain and high winds. In Atlanta a few sprinkles on the windshields tends to cause major traffic problems, but this storm created chaos of near biblical proportions.

There were crashes all over the place, shutting down the highways. There were crashes at the crash sites as the original crashes were being cleaned up. There were crashes across the highway from the crashes as people hit the breaks to see what was happening on the other side of the highway.

It was unreal. It took me 3 1/2 hours to get around the Atlanta bypass. As I was sitting in the backup, not moving an inch, I saw a crash happen on the opposite side of the highway. By the time it was over with there were 3 big rigs in the ditch, a taxi was sitting in the middle of the highway smashed to bits (he caused the whole thing), and about 7 or 8 other cars and pickups scattered around with various degrees of damage. All because the taxi simultaneously cut off a big rig and slammed on his brakes. Not a smart combination, especially on a wet highway.

From the reports I gathered on the CB, there were at least 5 different crashes involving big rigs just around the Atlanta bypass, another one just South of the bypass, and 2 North of the bypass. Unbelievable.

Atlanta, rain, and stupid drivers makes for a very long drive over a very short distance.

rubberneckers! Can they not get it into their tiny heads that rubber necking causes more accidents?

I hope you are not too stressed by it all, get your knitting out and give yourself some soothing therapy.

Thanks Jen. I've had my dinner, popped in a DVD and started knitting.

A guy who knits told me that knitting in public is a good way to meet women so I decided to put that to the test this evening. When I went in to have dinner I took my knitting with me. While I was waiting for my food I started knitting. I guess he was right. I had conversations with three different women who came over to ask about or comment on my knitting while I was waiting for my food to arrive.

Shoot, driving around Atlanta on a bright, sunny day can be pretty pathetic in and of itself.  Some of the absolute worst traffic in the nation there.

D.C.'s no great area either, especially if there's any sort of precipitation in the air and on the ground, but neither area compares to New York or L.A. (and Dallas-Ft. Worth can be pretty bad too).

Then again, you've been around a lot of the country, so I'm sure you know just about all of the worst areas to travel through.

Oh, one other area I detest driving around/through: Charlotte.  I think that's colored a bit by memories of the area being torn up and under construction which caused a seeming never-ending stream of traffic that seemed as if it would never let anyone pass through.

Yeah, Atlanta is one of many places that are best avoided if possible. These days traffic around any major city is terrible. There are simply too many cars and not enough pavement. Of course, no matter how many roads and lanes are built, traffic will still be terrible simply because people either do not know how to drive or refuse to obey the basic rules of the road which is the primary cause of most traffic problems.

Sitting up above the traffic one gets a different view of what is really going on. Impatience, rudeness, and selfishness are the primary causes of most traffic problems, including accidents.

I foresee a point some time in the future where major cities ban motorist commuting completely. It's the only thing that will truly relieve the constantly growing congestion in these cities. Mass transit will eventually become mandatory both to save on fuel and to relieve traffic problems. It's only a matter of time and the building of the infrastructure needed.

No Offense, but the last time Atlanta had intelligence was Rhett Butler and Scarlet Ohara!

Glad you got through with only the stupids actions to delay you.
