A bunch of useless crap
and a gift for my mom

It's a nice day so I rode the bent to Wally World. While there I bought some super bulky yarn and some size 15 and 17 needles as well as some other odds and ends. Mom had mentioned that she would like a knitting starter kit so she can teach herself to knit. She's been doing crochet for years so she can probably pick it far easier than myself. So I bought her the same starter kit with instruction book that I had bought for myself as well as some larger needles (the kit only comes with 6 and 8).

She was tickled when I gave them to her. I imagine that she's already hard at it.

I started a scarf with the new bulky yarn and size 17 needles, but after a few rows I didn't like the way it looked so I unraveled it and restarted it with the size 15 needles which is looking much better. It's coming along a whole lot faster than the one I am working on in medium worsted yarn and size 10 needles. I should be able to finish this one fairly quickly. I'll finish the other one while out on the road.

This super bulky yarn is a bit harder to worth with. It's a lot more fuzzy and doesn't slide as easily as the worsted weight does. But I think it's going to produce a thick and warm scarf.

Good luck, Mason.

I tried and tried and tried to learn to knit, but I just completely suck at it. Dharma sent me all kinds of knitting goodies and recommended all kinds of helpful resources, but I still couldn't manage it.

I'm glad it's working out for you. A man of many talents.

So now you have two on the go - are you actually going to finish one Mason?

It does sound like you are enjoying the experience though!

Thanks Tex. Maybe you should take a class. Sometimes it easier with someone right there to help.

Yeah, I'll finish both but really I am in a learning mode and experimenting with different yarn weights, needle sizes, and stitch patterns goes along with that. The one I am working on now using the bulkier yarn will be the first one to finish and should make for a nice thick scarf.

Cool. The lace patterns are sometimes faster too, but they're better to do after you've got a little practice in. You might want to get some needle caps for the ends if you haven't yet. It helps keep the stitches from slipping off when you're not working on them.

Well, so far I wouldn't call the mess I am making knitting. More like sad, feeble attempts at it.
