A bunch of useless crap
Published on December 20, 2006 By MasonM In Misc
I need a good hobby to keep myself occupied. I've been thinking about it for a little while.

It has to be something that I can do while on the road, so it has to be as portable as possible, not require any special tables or other set up, and be safe to do in an enclosed space like a truck.

I used to really enjoy doing wood burning, but that's not practical in the truck.

Painting is out of the question for the same reasons as well as a complete lack of talent.

I was talking to a friend of mine and he suggested knitting. He's been doing it himself for a while and says he finds it very relaxing. I don't know a damn thing about knitting, but maybe that's a good thing. I have always enjoyed learning knew things.

I may just have to see if I can locate a decent instructional book and/or DVD or something. I can't imagine knitting would be a very expensive hobby, it would be very portable (I think), and safe to do indoors. Besides, if I can learn how maybe I could knit myself a nice sweater or something.

I'm going to look into it when I make it back home.

why don't you do something that involves your computer, you always have it with you.

Do a course or something learning to write programs or something.

Get an artsy type program and make ecards etc - does not involve free hand drawing or painting just imagination and the computer software know how.

Get a program that you can make crosswords with set up a website and we can do the crosswords and puzzles...

oh I don't know there must be loads of things that can be done on the laptop?

Yeah, I already do a lot on my computer. I was really thinking of something that doesn't involve a computer.

I would like to learn to knit too. It would be worth trying. There's just something about making something with your own two hands, the textural aspect of it. I can't tell you where or how to start but I'm sure Dharma would point you in the right direction.

My eyes aren't good enough for something like cross stitch these days.

Loca: Yeah Dharma would probably be able to recommend a resource or two. Maybe she'll see this.

I used to cross stitch but find it hard to do when I'm tired and it's usually late after the boys go to bed that I find time to work on my hobbies. I just made too many mistakes because I was too tired.

I now am a stamper/collage artist. I would tell you to try stamping Mason but I think it would take too much equipment on the road. Unless you could streamline which I can't seem to do. Here's a link to stampscapes. They do the scenic stamping which it seems like many of the men who stamp like to do. I like stamping because I make something beautiful even though I can't draw.

I've read recently that men do knit. In fact I think Psuedosoldier or someone else, Special nobody Spc...I could be wrong but I think I remember reading it on one of their blogs. And yeah, Dharma is the resident knitter and a good source. I think that's a marvelous new activity to keep you busy. Oh, Walmart does have quite a selection of needles and books in their craft area, I've been thinking about it myself but nothing doing yet.

Thanks Loca but that does seem like too much to be as portable as I would like.

I already know how to play guitar. The problem with carrying a guitar in the truck is the climate changes I go through all of the time are hard on a guitar. They also take up way too much room in the truck.

Yeah, there are even websites specifically for men who are into knitting. My friend emailed me links to a couple of them. I guess he was trying to convince me it was too "female" a hobby.

I'm going to look in Wal Mart the next time I get a chance.
