Watching LOTR And Having A Smoke

One of the notable things about the LOTR movies is the abundance of pipe smoking. And not just any old pipes but the long wood churchwarden pipes. Churchwardens happen to be my favorite style of pipe, a meerschaum churchwarden being outstanding.
So I'm watching LOTR tonight and I just had to break out my long wooden churchwarden. It's an exact replica of the one smoked by Gandalf the Gray. It's quite impressive looking and fun to smoke even though it's far from the best smoking pipe I own (it smokes a tad wet). And if I happen to smoke it in public someplace (like a truckstop) it definitely draws attention and comments.
It's the bottom one on this pic.
It just seems like the right pipe to smoke when watching LOTR.
Ah well, intermission is over, back to the DVD.

I stumbled into a smoke shop on Tuesday and didn't realise until I walked in, how odd I must look in there because it was so obviously geared for men! There were a lot of 'girlie' pictures on the wall, or make that posters with very suggestive poses. And the amount of pipes were mind boggling. They were pipes that I don't even think was for actual tobacco but other stuff.
It was quite interesting!

Sounds more like a "head shop" than a real smoke shop (tobacconist). Most real tobacconist shops are quite nice and are normally decorated in a very dignified and conservative manner.

Yep, have some churchwarden pipe cleaners. I buy the pipe cleaner in a roll and just cut it to the lengths I need. I also have a long wire contraption designed for cleaning those extra long churchwardens as sometimes you just can't push a pipe cleaner through them very well.

A geek is a person who is fascinated, perhaps obsessively, by technology and imagination.

Great looking pipe, Mason. I remember Gandalf using the pipe but I thought it was a little fanciful. But no, yours is very much what he was using too. (No, I'm not a geek, I just hang out with a few
)
The one in the case looks a little like the pipe Sherlock Holmes is depicted as smoking.

I think that definition leaves a lot to be desired.

Thanks. Yeah, it's a replica of the same pipe. One can order replicas of every pipe used in that movie. I've been thinking about ordering the one that Strider used.
The other pipe is a Calabash and indeed it was made famous by the Sherlock Holmes novels and movies. It's without question the best smoking pipe I own. A meerschaum bowl set on a calabash gourd.

Calabash, yes, I remember that now. Cool pipe, that one. If I were a pipe smoker, I think it would be the sort I'd like... "That's not a pipe, THIS is a pipe..." LOL

It is a very enjoyable smoke but because it's so heavy and awkward it's less than ideal for a lot of situations (like driving). You can't just hold it in your mouth like lighter pipes because it's so damn heavy it'll wear your jaw muscles out just trying to grip it. But it's perfect for just sitting and relaxing with a good smoke. It's one of my favorites to take to the bar.
