A bunch of useless crap

This is turning into the load from Hell.

When I finally left the yard this morning I got about 5 miles down the road and received a call from dispatch. He said that someone had called and said that my trailer brakes were smoking. As I am pulling a wide load I can't see the trailer wheels. I quickly found a wide spot on the shoulder and pulled off to check it out.

It turned out to not be the brakes. When the mechanic had adjusted the trailer's air bag valve to lower the trailer he didn't set it correctly and the trailer dropped all the way down as I was driving. The smoke was from the tires rubbing on the trailer. Two tires were destroyed. Back to the yard.

I got the trailer tires replaced and then adjusted the air valve myself, not trusting the mechanic to do it. I left again.

I made it down to Bloomington, IL just as the sun set. I pulled into the truckstop parking lot, which is basically a large sheet of ice with some serious ruts and bumps. As I was pulling through to get to a parking space I hit a bad bump. The firetruck took a hop, snapped the two chains on it's rear. The sudden release of the downward pressure from the chains caused it to hop over towards the passenger side of the trailer. It almost came off the trailer. Almost. The back wheels on that side are only hanging on by a couple of tread widths. Scared the hell out of me as it would have flipped the whole rig on it's side had it come on over. Any idea how much force it takes to make a firetruck that weighs over 50,000 lbs hop? A helluva lot.

I detached, which was not easy on the ice. Pulled away from the now dropped deck, and went to start up the firetruck. I even found another driver willing to spot me while I backed the firetruck off the deck and drove it back on straight. Unfortunately the batteries are low in the firetruck and it wouldn't start. Damn!

You can't jump start one of these things. It has a built in battery charger but that requires 110V ac to charge the batteries. I have a generator but don't have a heavy duty extension cord to run out to the socket on the rear of the firetruck. Naturally the truckstop doesn't have them either.

Now I'm pretty much shit out of luck. I'll have to wait until morning and call my office to give them the wonderful news and find out what the hell they want me to do about it. Once again I won't be getting that early, sunrise start that I had planned.

This trip has pretty much turned to shit.

Sorry about your problems.  Guess the life of a trucker is not all cowboys and indians!

Good luck once you get on the road again.

Thanks. Sometimes it goes down the toilet in a hurry.

Ah well, at least the firetruck didn't come completely off the trailer. I'd really hate to be the one responsible for a claim on a firetruck valued at over a million bucks. I doubt the boss would be happy.

I am just glad to hear that it didn't flip the whole rig over and possibly hurting you and Socrates.

This wasn't a warm and fuzzy story.

I'm glad you are o.k. I hope that is the end of the bad stuff.

Me too! Yikes, good thing it didn't fall all the way off!

I'm glad you made it though! Good luck with getting it off your truck in the morrow!

Thanks, I'm pretty glad it didn't roll off too.

I'm still dealing with it this morning. I had to go pick up a heavy duty extension cord and an adapter to connect it to the power port on the fire truck. Now I'm waiting for the batteries to charge enough to start the thing.

I still have no idea how I'm going to get it off the trailer to reset it's position. I need some lumber or blocks or something to put under the wheels on that side so they have something besides air to hold them up while backing off the trailer. I couldn't find a frigging lumber yard around here anywhere. I'm hoping a heavy hauler will pull into the lot as they always carry lumber on their trailers. That'll kill two birds with one stone as I also need someone who knows what they're doing to act as a spotter for me while I drive the fire truck.

I think it's going to be a long day.

Well I finally got the thing started but still not luck with anything to use as blocking. I convinced the boss to just go ahead and call a heavy wrecker service to come out and give me a hand with it. It'll be expensive but at this point we're out of options.

Now I'm just waiting for him to show up. I don't know if he'll be able to pick up the back of the fire truck and move it over or just provide blocking and spotter aid, but at least I know some sort of assistance is on the way.

Wow Mason....I am currently writing a trucker into my JUWC challenge......you might want to check him out sometime.

Hope things work out, be careful...turning over a truck makes my heart pound just thinking about it.

Good lord Mason, I am relieved to read that it did not flip over and cause you and Socrates an injury. This whole trip sounds like it is cursed, I will be holding thumbs that no more baddies happen!
