A bunch of useless crap

This morning I went up to Oshkosh to pick up a fire truck from the factory. I'll be running it down to FL. I made an appointment with our shop to have my truck serviced and to have them check out the generator to see why it didn't want to run.

On the way to Oshkosh my truck decided that it didn't want to run either. I chugged and sputtered all the way there and back. I put it in the shop as soon as I got back. I was right about the generator, it was the fuel filter. They replaced it and changed the oil in the generator while they were at it.

They're still working on the truck. I suspect that I got some bad fuel at that last fuel stop on the way up. No way that the truck's fuel filter and the generator's fuel filter would just happen to both go bad at the same time. I had fueled Saturday afternoon and the problems started after that. They'll need to replace the truck's filter and put some additives in the fuel tanks to displace any water or other contaminants in the fuel.

The fire truck is a big one. Oversized load. It's also too tall. I've already let the air out of the tires and once they finish with my truck I'll go out and crank down on the chains to draw the thing down to below 14 feet tall. It's a lot of extra work but it has to be done to get the thing low enough that it doesn't require escorts.

I plan to get started at daybreak tomorrow and with any luck I'll be back down in nice, warm Florida again for a Thursday morning delivery.

Well, I know it's just the job your doing.... but let me be ONE person to at least say THANK YOU.

I know you are not the firefighter, nor the army man. Yet you still support us in your own way. I've read almost all of your articles and know you do a lot of base shipping and such. And for that I thank you.

Those who do the long down the lines support never get the thanks they truly deserve. I know that feeling myself from being in Supply on my ship. I extend my biggest thanks to you for your help Mason.

And btw, Socrates sounds like an awesome live'a'long pet to have Glad he's adjusted so well and you two get along

Thanks M-Post, I appreciate it. As a vet, it goes without saying that I appreciate all of the young men and women serving our country.

Yeah, Socrates definitely keeps me occupied

Had a change of plans. I won't be leaving out at daybreak in the morning for a couple of reasons. Firstly, one of my steer tires developed a valve stem leak today and the tire guy had already left for the day when it was spotted so they are going to do it in the morning.

Secondly, I wasn't able to get the fire truck under 14 ft high so we're going to work on that tomorrow morning as well. It looks like we'll have to get the shop to rig the trailer's air bag valve so as to lower it a couple of inches. That will get it to 14'4" which is as good as it's going to get. Not strictly legal but we can route it in such a way as to avoid the most particular states and any low bridges.

It's always something.

But at least you get to go to Florida...it was 17 degrees this morning and hasn't been above 30 all day...where's global warming when you need it?

I've been wondering the same thing.

And let me be the NUMBER TWO person to do likewise. I've never trucked, but I've got a lot of friends who do/have and I have an appreciation for the biz.

(Heh, when i was in my twenties a good friend hauled hay and I would go with him to load/unload alfalfa bales from the feilds and into dairy barns -in other words WORK!)

Too much work! I did watermelons once. Only once.

How common is bad fuel?  I hear about it, so try to stick with Chains when I fill up.  But have had some bad tanks.

And think positive thoughts!  As in t-shirt weather!

Here's another "thank you " for your work!  if there was more professional drivers like you,  we wouldn't have freeway "messes"...

I got a tank of bad fuel onetime,  almost ruined our car.  Of course that's not including the time i accidentally put regular into our taxicab,  and it was a diesel!

Getting bad diesel isn't too uncommon. Some vendors buy older fuel which often has bacterial growth which clogs fuel lines and filters. Others have badly vented tanks which leads to water in the fuel.

I'm thinking warm, but am still freezing

Ouch! That's a no-no.

We've had that problem before, bad fuel. It messes up your vehicle! We know what station to steer clear of.

Thank heavens you were able to take care of the problem!

Hugs to Socrates! It's 56degrees here right now. Not bad at all!

Sounds a lot better than 12 degrees here.
