A bunch of useless crap

After receiving numerous calls from local citizens about Sheriff's Deputies hanging out in a church parking lot for hours at a time instead of working a news station decided to check it. Over the course of a couple of weeks they staked out the church parking lot with their news cameras.

Sure enough, they taped several deputies. sometimes as many as 6 or 7, hanging out in this parking lot shooting the breeze and generally goofing off. One corporal in particular was shown to sit in that parking lot for between 4 and 5 hours every shift.

When questioned by the reporter the deputy claimed that he was reading reports. Uh huh. The video footage showed the deputies standing around talking and horseplaying, not reading or writing reports. While the Sheriff refused to speak with the reporter his second in command gave some standard PR answers and said that they would be looking into it.

Tax dollars at work.

Yikes! Getting caught with their pants down in a way! I would like to hear what they have to say for themselves. Maybe the town is just not busy.

Speeders are probably happy.

This is Hillsborough county. It's the county in which I live and in which the city of Tampa resides. As far as law enforcement goes, this county is certainly busy and needs the officers out on patrol not goofing off and horseplaying in a parking lot for half their shift.

It seems to only be about a half dozen or so out of some 1200 deputies, but still it's a serious waste of tax money. So far they are still claiming that they were doing paperwork but the video says otherwise.

Frankly, I hope they fire them and replace them with officers willing to do what the taxpayers are paying them to do.

No doubt.

We've had a lot of law enforcement problems here over the years. The police in the city where I live was very, very corrupt. The FBI finally investigated all of the complaints and many, including the Chief of Police went to prison. Our current police force is better but some corruption still exists. Sad state of affairs.

Now a small percentage of our county deputies are goofing off instead of protecting the citizens.

Yeah, there is that. We don't have too much of that sort of problem. The city cops are more likely to hassle you than the sheriff's dept. I once had a city cop stop me on my bicycle to give me a DUI test. He was quite pissed when I easily passed. I'm pretty sure he had better things to do.

I wonder if he could have given you a ticket if you had not?

Yes he would have. DUI on a bicycle is illegal.

The hilarious part was the dumbass asked me for my driver's license. I just looked down at my bicycle and back up at him and asked when the hell did a person need a driver's license to ride a bicycle?

He realized how stupid he sounded and switched to asking for an ID. Idiot.

He used those disposable breath tests. They cost $40 of taxpayer money for each one. He wasted 3 of them on me before he figured out that I hadn't been drinking. I had been playing darts in a bar but had only had a single beer the entire time and that had been like 4 hours before he stopped me.

What a waste of taxpayer money.

Here in texas it would have been P.I. or Public Intoxication. That's a class 'C'' misdemeanor (similar in severity to a traffic ticket)punishable by fine only unless you have 2 prior convictions and then it goes to a class 'B' which is the same as a DWI or something like that where you can get county time and one BIG fine. Funny thing: I know a guy who got a PI in a bar! yes, you can get one in a bar because it's a PUBLIC PLACE! and get this! If you and me are sittin' on my front porch we can get one for that because we're in the view of the public! P.I. can be EASILY abused -depends on the cop.

I've heard of the PI stings in bars. The front porch thing is a bit over the top in my opinion.
