A bunch of useless crap
or, how to get there in 6 easy steps

Out of deference to my bum hip I'm making the run to SouthWestern VA in short hops of 2 to 3 hours to give me a chance to get out of the driver's seat and move around a bit to ease the pain and stiffness a bit.

It feels a lot better today than it did yesterday although I am still forced to use the cane. Hopefully by tomorrow morning I'll be able to leave the cane in the truck. Maybe even later today if it continues to improve.

I'm currently stopped in Gary, IN for breakfast. Gary is not a nice place. It's as much a suburb of Chicago as a part of Indiana and is one of the few places in the country that's so rough that the truckstop has armed security guards. Yep, it's a real shit hole. I normally pass on Gary and stop further South in Indiana, but my hip insisted on a stop so here I am. I got lucky and found a parking space close to the building so didn't have too far to walk.

I usually like to park in the back and enjoy the exercise of walking to the building, but not today.

The last time I spent the night here in Gary I was accosted by not one, not two, but three seperate crack heads either trying to sell hot watches and jewelry, drugs, or just plain panhandling. One of them tried to get rough but I put a halt to that pretty quick by magically producing a rather large hunting knife he didn't see beforehand. I hate this place.

I'll have my breakfast and a quick stretch of the legs before moving on down the road a couple or three more hours. I expect to stop within 3 or 4 hours of my first delivery point as I don't have any special time to be there. The second stop is only about 4 1/2 hours from there and can't deliver until 8:00 am Tuesday morning so I'm not really pressed for time at this point.

Great, the more rest you can give yourself the better you will feel. I've never even ventured that far. I really need to go on a road trip. Although by the sound of it, Gary, IN is not someplace I would like to be.

Truckstop has armed security guards and crazy panhandling crackheads? Jeez...now that's definately not a nice place.

Well good luck with the hip and watch out for the rather nasty people.

Everyone should do a road trip. And no, I don't recommend Gary as a tourist stop.

Yeah, it's a lovely place. I believe it's listed in Better Slums and Sewers.

Thanks.

Well, I haven't been there in some years and it was a real shit hole then. I see things hadn't changed. Another thing I remember was the smell of the pollution. The whole city stunk so bad you drove faster just to escape it.

Thanks, it's a lot better than it was.

If you ever decide to visit Gary I'd recommend a small submachine gun and kevlar.

EVERY person I know who has been to Gary has said nothing but negative things about it. You would think they would try to clean up their rep...it's a shame.

btw, it's the childhood home of Michael Jackson and family...dunno if anyone knew that.
