A bunch of useless crap
Published on August 4, 2006 By MasonM In Misc
Last night I was tinkering around with my desktop. I tried some new icons and graphics. It wasn't a radical change, but I thought it looked nice and so I posted a screenshot in my blog. Within a few minutes an Admin removed my screenshot image. WTF?

There was nothing obscene, vulgar, or objectionable about my desktop at all. No nudie pic or anything like that. The only reasons I can think of for this is that either this Admin has gotten carried away here, screenshots have suddenly become a TOS violation I was unaware of, or Linux users are no longer welcome here. Now, I do know that many JU blog articles cross over to some of the other "company" related sites and forums (certainly not my fault), but I believe that Admin can tell whether an article was posted as a JU blog article or in one of those forums, especially if he has to access it to edit (butcher) it.

This wasn't anything really important so I just deleted the article, but I wanted to express the fact that I find it to be highly offensive to have my blog article edited in such a way when it was not in TOS violation. I have never had a problem with an admin here before and try to make a point of complying with the TOS I agreed to when I started my blog here so I really don't appreciate my blog article being arbitrarily butchered in this manner.

Now, I'm not going to fly off the handle over this one incident and go into a rage calling this admin a fascist, say I'm leaving JU, and all of that drama. I like JU and enjoy blogging here in this community atmosphere. I chose to go to bed and sleep on it rather than post this article at the time because, frankly, I was angry and didn't want to post it while I was angry because I appreciate the fact that Brad provides JU free of charge for people like myself to blog.

Like I said, it was just a stupid screenshot, I just don't appreciate one of my blog articles being editied in this manner for no good reason I can see and wanted to vent.

I have not read the TOS Lately, but even if it was obscene or hateful, they normally just pull it out of the forums, not delete it.

I think it's something to do with background copyright or something. You'd have to ask whoever did it.

You have to understand the admins over at WinCusto have devised lots of nitpicky rules over the years. If, say, your wallpaper wasn't covered up enough, they'd moderate the screenshot on the grounds you could be seen as redistributing the wallpaper. They have other criteria as well, I can't remember it all.

I'll withhold further comment until you get to the bottom of what really happened. I'll just say that when I post blogs here I pay pretty close attention to what section I post them to, given the fact that the admins over there only see certain ones. You have to be more careful with the profanity in those sections, too.

I'm guessing you posted it to personal computing. It could have been they thought it was too big, but I kind of doubt it was the Linux thing. If I were you I'd post it again and see if they remove it again. Usually they'll send you an email if they get mad enough.

You didn't hear it from me, but I'm betting Jafo has your answer, lol...

Ok, thanks for the information. That does make sense. I did post it in Personal Computing and it was a pretty clear view of the desktop (including the DOT COM signature). I understand now, my bad, not the Admin's. I didn't understand the brief comment he had left, but it makes sense to me now. That's exactly what the problem was.

Live and learn. My apolgies to the Admin for my little rant as it turns out I was wrong and you were right.

Well, I disagree, honestly MasonM. I don't think the admins over there should be messing with our blogs, but the fact that our stuff appears over there, and the fact that WC has different standards, AND the fact that I don't think they can really tell what was posted from where makes it a problem.

You should post it again. You could make yourself an article in personal computing discussing it with a link to the image, instead of the image itself. If they remove that then raise hell, if you ask me. There's no reason why you shouldn't be allowed to post your screenshot on your blog.

You just have to understand they deal with a lot of yard apes who constantly upload idiotic crap, so their admin guns are set to a hair trigger. My guess now that you mention the dot com thing is that they thought it was site advertising.

No, not advertising, the signature is small and not easily readable. I did repost it, in Misc, and with an app window open to obscur it enough to make it unusable to someone else so as to not be redistribution.

I'll just try and avoid the crossover to their forums when possible. I agree they shouldn't be messing with our blogs, but understand the copyright issues well enough.

I think they pretty much frown on just posting screenshots in the forums at all. I guess from their point of view if everyone made a new post about a screenshot they could get buried fairly quickly.

You ought to let them know you weren't posting from WC, though, if you ask me. Maybe they'd be more apt to post a comment and let you correct it instead of being hardasses about it. They should have left a comment and given you the chance to correct it yourself.

I'm not going to sweat it.

Who edited your post (do you remember the admin's name?)  I don't see a problem with your original screenshot.  (I'm an Admin on WC, and have been since it started).

Don't they delete any post over at the WC messageboard that is just a screenshot, Karma? I think the policy is that if you want to do that you need to put it in the monthly screenshot thread. I was thinking they just deleted screenshot spam like that by default unless they dealt with a particular issue or there was some question about what was being displayed.

It makes it kind of hard because what we post on our blogs under the personal computing, internet, games, etc., ends up skunking up their messageboard over there, too. I don't blame them, they don't realize that it is coming from blogs.

It was Jafo, but at this point I kind of understand why he did it. No big deal at this point. I was angry about it, but it was at least in part due to my lack of understanding of his reasons. Everything's cool now as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, I'm sure that's what happened. No hard feelings now on my part.

Basically, the best way to protect your blog from WC moderation is to either not post to categories that cross-post, or uncheck the box that posts an article to the forums as well. Personally, I don't think anyone here should have to worry about moderation over there, but we don't have the system setup that way at the moment. When it comes to anything that potentially falls under the domain of windows customization, like screens etc. it gets tough. My suggestion is to just not post to forums when you want to post screenshots or other pc-related images to your blog. It'll save grief and confusion. Not the optimal solution, but it's all I've got.

But you are Zoomba!  We expect perfection.

Yeah, I'll just avoid the cross overs.
