A bunch of useless crap

When I got home the other day I got with the phone company and placed an order on Mom's behalf for DSL service at her place. The modem and assorted parts arrived yesterday and the service was scheduled to be on today.

She has a laptop thanks to the generosity of a JU couple, to whom she and I are very grateful. I set it up with Linux so I don't need to worry about her getting a virus or something on it. She's not all that computer literate and I figured it would just be safer that way. I set it up as automatic as I could make it so her learning curve is minimal. I also have it set up so that I can access it remotely if there's a problem while I am away.

I went over this morning and set everything up for her, and she now has access to the net. This will make things a lot easier for her as she can now communicate via email to handle a lot of the things she's had to rely on others to do for her via telephone. This will give her back some of her independence. It will also give her the ability to communicate with me while I am out on the road.

She seems pretty pleased by it.  I set up an email account for her, so she can happily email to her heart's content. She already has the email addresses of several of her friends, and I put them in for her and taught her how to add more as she goes.

After lunch they were heading for Wally World and as I needed a few things I rode along with them. We did our shopping and met up again at the front of the store to return home. On the ride home Mom handed me a note that read "A little girl asked her mother what was wrong with me. She told the little girl that I had throat surgery, and that people like that should stay home".

Needless to say I was livid. What a fucking bitch! It's probably a good thing that I hadn't heard this shit, that bitch would have got an earful from me. What a thing to teach a child! Instead of teaching her kid to have some empathy and understanding for other other people this bitch is just teaching the kid to be judgmental and selfish.

I can only hope that this bitch goes through the same thing after her kid is older, and the kid makes her selfish, self-centered, uncaring ass stay in the house. It would serve her right. What a cunt.

While at the store I picked up a nice chuck roast. I'll probably make it for dinner tomorrow. It's a nice big one so I'll get a nice dinner out of it with enough left over for some nice roast beef sandwiches for a couple of days. I haven't made a roast in a while and am looking forward to it.

Tonight I'm making pizza.

Frank told me he overheard my asshole neighbor talking to his grandson the other day (before I got home). I guess the kid had asked about the screen house I erected on my carport, mainly to keep the assholes from using my carport as a public sidewalk. Frank said the old fart actually told the kid "That stinking asshole put that up so you kids can't walk through there any more".

What an ass. He knows damn good and well I put it up to keep his ass from walking through there. Kinda gives me a chuckle to know it pissed him off. Serves him right for not respecting my property. He's old enough to know better. Of course he hasn't had the guts to say anything to me personally about it, which is fine because I don't want to talk to the old bastard anyway.

Ah well, life is never dull is it? Time for a cold one.

Got to point something out here.

Linux is as prone to getting a virus as any other OS. It's more about protecting users from themselves and their web surfing habits.

And given the fact that, lately, OSX and linux (in all it's various iterations) have become big targets, they aren't any safer than windows.

And to dump linux on a novice ? man.... what were you thinking?!

At the moment I'm thinking that you don't know as much as you think you do. I think you've been reading too much FUD propaganda.

Firstly, there aren't any known Linux virus "in the wild". Secondly, Linux doesn't allow for self-executing/self-installing applications and even if they could somehow magically self-execute their access would be limited to user files only as a normal user (and applications they run) can't access system files. Thirdly, I've used Linux for a great many years with absolutely no stability issues at all. Lastly, critical patches to fix any potential security holes are turned out far faster in the open source world than Microsoft can possibly manage (typically a matter of hours).

Linux is as easy to use as any other GUI OS so her being a novice isn't relevant at all.  She's been using daily now since I installed it and except for forgetting her email password a couple of times she's had no problems at all.
