A bunch of useless crap
Published on July 21, 2007 By MasonM In Blogging
It's been a stressful couple of days. One long traffic backup after another. I finally got my load delivered today, a full 24 hours late, and headed into WI to make way to the yard.

I stopped at a small truck stop inside of WI and decided to relax for the evening. After having something to eat I kicked back and started knitting. That always relaxes me. While I was working on the Irish Hiking Scarf I suddenly felt my truck rock to one side. Damn! I knew what that meant. Some asshole just hit my truck.

I jumped up front in time to see the dumbass pulling out and heading for the exit. I keyed up the radio and yelled for someone to stop him. A truck that was pulling in stopped across the drive effectively blocking the asshole's exit and I started for his truck.

Anyone can make a mistake. It happens. But if that someone isn't man enough to stay put and own up to it I tend to get a little pissed. In this case the dumbass in question was just stepping out of his truck as I made it up to him. I never said a word I just knocked him on his ass. He made the mistake of coming up swinging and I clobbered him again. He decided to stay down the second time.

I got his company name, his driver's license, and his license plate info while he smartly kept his ass on the pavement. I warned him that if he even thought about getting up I'd knock him into next week. I guess he believed me because he was still on the ground when the cops showed up.

He whined to the cop that I had assaulted him but once the cop got the statements from myself and the half dozen other drivers who had collected around the scene he told the asshole that it sounded to him like he had it coming and reminded him that hit and run is a felony offense. The asshole shut up at that point.

The cop took my statement as well as those of the other drivers but when I asked him if it would be ok if I just went ahead and beat the hell out of the aforementioned asshole he decided that it probably wouldn't be a good idea. Damn!

Anyone can make a mistake, and I am good with that, but when you screw up and try to run away I get just a tad pissed. Just a tad.

Hopefully the swelling in the first two knuckles of my right fist will go down in a day or two. I'm pretty sure the asshole's jaw and cheekbone will be sore for much longer. He already had a nice shiner going by the time the cop finished his report charging the asshole with careless driving.

So much for relaxing.

all you really needed to do was get the info, call the law and let the law handle it, another cop MIGHT have locked you up my friend.

You are right of course. It was the fact that he tried to run. That just gets my blood boiling. Back when I owned my own trucks I was hit more than once by jerks who then took off. I just have a hard time with people who won't own up to their responsibilities.

Hope that makes sense.

I know it wasn't the civilized thing to do but then I have never claimed to be civilized.

I can understand the urge to hit him... especially since he was trying to run... and basically you were just protecting yourself the 2nd time...

I probably wouldn't have stopped after just 2 swings..

Anyone running like that deserves some "old time justice". Maybe he'll think twice before trying it again.

Im just glad someone was able to stop him so you could get the info you needed and to aid the police in their job.

Yeah.. probably you shouldn't have hit him.. but.. he shouldn't have hit you first.. He started it.. you just finished it..

*Did I happen to mention I love the old tyme westerns..lol

Hope you were able to truly relax and let the knitting take you away from the real world... of course a brew or 2 might help!

of course it makes sense to ME mason, it's not him I worry about, it's you. supposses he was a nut and got out with a gun? what then? I lose a friend, for what? a dent in the truck? shit man you are worth more than that, it ain't like I never dusted anyone off before mason, I am sure you know that by now. Once he was trapped by the other truck, you 'had him'.

What's done is done, Mod. No need to lecture the poor guy. Mason knows what time it is.

Sorry you had a bad day, Mason. Tomorrow will be better. Drive safe.

Mason is a big boy and fully capable of telling me to fuck off all by himself, knowing I won't take it personal.

Especially bad shit always seem to happen when one tries to have a stress-free day, like when you're on your last hair, it's like Murphy's law or something.

I'm not surprised one bit you hit him. I am though that you stopped.

Some years back while visiting my parents one summer I heard a loud bang in front of the house. Since I was sleeping on the couch I get to the door quick and I saw some drunk guy had run into the right side of the porch. When he saw me he tried backing up real quick but he only went forward again. Then I could see him putting the car in reverse and trying to get away. I ran off the porch and dragged him out of the car and started beating on him until my dad knocked me off of him.

Hindsight is 20/20. Looking back on it, I probably just should held him until the cops arrived. Anger and adrenaline sometimes gets the better of you. The guy wanted charges brought against me but the cop told him that his face must've got injured during the crash. I got lucky I didn't get charged and I'm glad you didn't. Maybe it wasn't the civilized thing for you to do but I do know and understand why you did.

Yeah, yer right of course but I've never been one to think about such things in the heat of the moment. I know you've been there too my friend.

Thanks. I don't see MM as "lecturing", he's just a friend expressing concern for the stupidity of a friend.

And he's right, as usual.

That's especially funny as this cop said something similar to the asshole in my case. He said something about the guy musta bruised his face falling out of the truck while trying to run away.

Yeah, shit happens I guess.

Yep.

The good thing is that you caught him! It's great when people look out for each other as you truckers do!
on Jul 23, 2007

I think that guy better look at that shiner as an easy escape for a hit and run!  Guess he was thinking no one was at home so he could just run away.

The cops may have charged him with it if you had not hit him.

Hope your trip gets better this time.
