A bunch of useless crap
Published on March 6, 2007 By MasonM In Blogging
This morning it was very cold and extremely windy in Bridgeport, CT. I pulled the tarp off the saw and folded it up, but trying to handle a large tarp in high winds is an exercise in futility to say the least. It's very hard to keep hold of one of those things when it's trying to act as a sail, but I finally managed it and got unloaded.

After I left I got about 5 miles down the road and started feeling a lot of pain in my lower back. Uh oh. By the time I reached the truck stop I was in agony. It was very hard for me to climb down out of the rig. Walking inside was all about small steps and large pain. I'd obviously strained my lower back muscles while wrestling with that tarp.

I managed to climb slowly back up into the rig and started heading for Ft Dix, NJ to pick up an Army trailer to haul back to WI. It was a very long and painful ride. I got as far as Bordentown, NJ and had to stop. I decided to walk around a bit and get some breakfast. I was hoping moving around some would ease the pain and stiffness. No such luck.

I picked up some Ben Gay and rubbed it into my back, not really expecting it to actually help all that much but hell when you're in that much pain you'll try damn near anything. I downed a hand full of ibuprofin. I then called the boss to report my injury. I let him know I didn't think it was anything more than just muscle strain, but that it might be necessary for me to just lay down for a while after I made the pick up.

As he had just injured his back out in the cold Saturday he understood and told me to do whatever I had to do. I just wanted to make sure it was reported just in case of the slim chance of it turning into something that might actually require a doctor visit.

I got to Ft Dix but by that time I knew there was no way in Hell I was going to be able to crawl around under the trailer to do what needed to be done to detach the front deck so the trailer I was picking up could be driven onto my deck. I talked to the guy there and explained my situation. He said he'd noticed I was walking pretty badly. He said if I would tell him what to do he would do it for me. Great!

I talked him through taking the pins, plates, and lines loose and setting the 8x8 lumber under the deck to support it during detach. He did everything for me and I got the deck detached no problem. Nice guy. Once everything was loaded he reconnected everything for me and helped me chain down the load. I really appreciated him helping out as I would never have been able to get it done otherwise.

I called in and let them know I was loaded and was going to find a place to lay down. I'll be in WI whenever I get there. I could have stopped at Bordentown but the idea of spending the night in that zoo just didn't appeal to me so I grit my teeth and kept going on into PA. I'm now parked in a turnpike service plaza.

I'm laying down on my bunk for now. I couldn't even manage to get my shoes off for crying out loud. I have a feeling I'm not going to be able to get up again for a while. I hope this pain eases soon as I have no desire to visit any clinics or ERs. I'm going to have to try and move around at some point later if for no other reason than to get something to eat, but for now I'll just lay here like a beached whale and try to not move any more than I have to. The pain is seriously unreal right now.

Ok, that's enough pissing and moaning for now I guess.

Damned tarp. Sorry, bud.
Takes a lot for you to complain.

I hate tarps. I don't wanna appear to be whining, but this really hurts like hell. I can't even walk now.

Heres hoping you feel better in the morning.

Thanks, I hope so too.

There is not much worse than back pain. Take it easy mate. Hope it eases soon.

These Northeast truck drivers are all scum as far as I'm concerned. I am in so much pain I can't even walk. I've been on the CB for 2 hours trying to get one of the other drivers to go inside and bring me out something to eat. Not a single one of these scumbags is willing to do it.

If I were out in the Midwest, or down South, there would have been 10 guys offering to help at the first call.

Now I remember why I hate the NE so much. Guess I'll just go to bed hungry tonight. Screw it.

No doubt. Thanks.

I hope it eases up. I am fortunate in that I have not had back problems.  Lots of other things, but not back.

Damn,Mason, I hate to think of you stranded and hurt and hungry out there with no one to help you.

Have you tried calling the truckstop? Maybe one of the waitresses will walk you out a sack of food if you promise a healthy tip. They're far more tender-hearted than the other truckers, and you might be surprised at how willing they are to help.

Thanks. It was actually a turnpike service plaza. Just fast food and crap like that, no actual waitresses or anything. No biggie, I can stand to skip a meal or two.

PS-I'm sure this has occurred to you right now, but it bears repeating. Always, always, always have emergency food and water supplies in the truck!

Yeah, I have plenty of Gatorade on board, but the food supplies ran out a couple of days ago. I was planning on restocking when I got back to the yard this week. Actually I have a few of those microwave cups of soup, but my stupid generator still isn't working so I had no way to heat them up. I wound up eating one cold just to tide me over.

Thanks. You're very lucky as few things can be so instantly debilitating as sudden back pain.

When I got up this morning it seemed like it had eased up quite a bit. I took a handful of Advil and started heading up towards I-80 to reach a real truck stop for some much needed coffee and breakfast. It took all of about 2 miles for the pain to return with a vengeance.

I managed to park close to the building. I grabbed my cane to go inside. It was a living hell just getting down out of the truck. Un believable. Leaning heavily on the cane with both hands and the cane out in front of me I was able to very slowly baby step inside. I did have to stop several times to let the spasms ease up, but I made it.

I had a hot breakfast and some coffee and then slowly and carefully made my way back to the truck again. I'm going to try and get some miles down the road. It's snowing pretty good and the roads are a bit slick (PA sucks at cleaning the roads). I'm going to go for as long as I can stand the pain. If I can make it back to the yard in WI the boss will send me to the doctor to get some muscle relaxers and put me up in a hotel for a couple of days for this to ease up. That would be much better than visiting some ER where I don't know anyone as once I take the muscle relaxers I won't be able to drive for a few days.

Yeah, sounds like you need muscle relaxers.

I know this sounds odd, but have you tried icing it?  I had really bad muscle spasms in my back (I literally fell on the floor and couldn't get up, which made me chuckle, but it hurt like hell).  One of the therapies that I was told to do is to ice for 20 minutes several times a day.  It brings down the swelling in the muscle so that it can relax a bit.

You need a couple of brewskies Mason. They'll give you a short break.

I wish a JUser was near enough to where you were parked to come bring you some food and TLC. Sucks to be alone when you are in pain.

Yeah, they did the ice pack thing in PT after my back surgery. I hated that. It might be worth a try if I can work it out somehow.

Yeah, actually that would probably help relax the muscles. If I can find a place it'll be worth trying. If it doesn'y help at least I won't mind as much.
