A bunch of useless crap

After delivering the fire truck to the Air Force base this morning I went into St Louis to pick up another load. Just about the time I arrived I got a call telling me that load had cancelled. Oh well. Sometimes that happens. I made my way to the truckstop (one with WiFI of course) and awaited a call for another load.

I got the call this afternoon, the place was only 15 miles from me. Cool! I trucked on over there to see what they had for me. It was an 80ft boom lift. My first question was "Ummm, exactly how much does that sucker weigh?" 38,000lbs was the response.

As long as the boom was, even collapsed, the thing would have to be set at one extreme end of the trailer or the other with the boom resting on the opposite end. That just wasn't going to work as it would concentrate far too much weight on either the trailer axles or the drive axles depending on which way it was situated. No way to get the weight even close to evenly distributed.

As DOT regulations only allow a maximum of 34,000lbs on any set of tandem axles, this was a real problem. Had I been pulling a spread axle trailer it could have worked as the 6ft spread between the tandems allows one to legally carry extra weight on them. But no such luck here. I called my office and informed them of the situation, telling them there was no way to scale it out correctly and asked what they wanted me to do. (I already knew the answer).

"If we can't scale it out, we can't haul it. They aren't paying "permit rates."" That was all I needed to hear. I told the man I was sorry but there was no way I could haul it for him and that he should make a point of telling the broker to request a spread axle trailer for it.

Now I am back at the same truckstop, for the night, awaiting the call some time tomorrow that will send me on my merry way once again.

So do you sleep in your cab?

Yes I do. My truck is equipped with a sleeper which is pretty comfortable. I have a decent bed (two actually although I keep the top bunk folded up against the wall), cabinets, a small closet, a desk, and since it's a "condo" unit it's tall enough to stand up and walk around.

All in all it's fairly comfortable. I have to admit that with all the running I've been doing and the rainy weather I've been in it's a tad cluttered and dirty at the moment. I'm looking forward to getting home and doing some cleaning.

My house is in Florida, but I pretty much live in the truck and visit the house once every few weeks.

At least you live somewhere warm! Well, kinda!

Safety is the main thing!

So you actually never know in advance where you're going? Sounds cool (I mean for single people, must be hell for a Mum or a Dad).

Sometimes I know in advance what the next load will be, more often not.

Hey! You're still here? lol! I just thought you'd be sleeping at this time.
Good luck for the next load

Thanks. Yep, still here, relaxing and tinkering with my Linux system.

I know about the weight thing.  A couple of guys and I actually overloaded a Semi by hand!  That took some doing! (fortuantely there was a truck stop with a scale across the street so they weighed it before taking it on the road).

The biggest problem?  The over weight was on the front axels!  So we created a hole through the boxes and pulled off some from the front.  We did not unload the whole thing!

Just curious, but wouldn't they be better off to drive the boom truck where they wanted it to be?

Also, do you post a "No Lot Lizards" sign on your truck door?

It wasn't a boom truck, but one of those boom lifts used on constructions sites and such. I think it's top speed is something like 3mph.

Unfortunately those No Lot Lizards signs don't do a bit of good. When I owned my own rig I had them posted but it never stopped them from knocking anyway. As a matter of fact I was awakened this morning around 4:00 am by some scag banging on my door. I slid open the sleeper window a little bit and less than politely told her I was sleeping and she'd best beat feet while she could as I was calling the cops. (I didn't actually, but it had the desired effect) I really hate being woke up like that.

Sorry 'bout the confusion on the equipment.

My very brief driving career came with several unwanted wake-up calls as well.

I don't think any amount of alcohol could make one of those women(?)appealing...........
